Sunderland's in form, 'buy of the season', striker Darren Bent scored his 25th goal of the campaign , 24th in the league, in Saturday's 1-0 away win at now doomed Hull City. What more does Bent need to do to book his ticket to South Africa?

The win at Hull was Sunderland's only away league win since the opening day of the season in which Darren Bent scored the only goal of the game at Bolton.  

When asked if Bent was his best buy this season Bruce replied:

"I would think you'd have to say yes.

"When you spend big you need a return otherwise there's some pressure comes on the manager.

"I had no hesitation. He enjoys scoring a goal and more importantly he's a decent lad too."

He added: "He's been invaluable; 25 goals is a wonderful return for his first season at the club." 

It seems that now even the media are beginning to support Bent in his bid to go to the world cup.

Darren Bent is the second highest top scoring Englishman in the Premier League this season with 24 goals, only 2 behind top of the list Wayne Rooney and 1 behind Chelsea star Didier Drogba, with Jermaine Defoe further down the list on 18.

Surely with Rooney's fitness a doubt Capello will have to look at taking another 'goal scorer' to South Africa.

It seems that people are saying that Defoe and Bent are fighting for the same place and I know who I'd rather have on the plane.

Bent has consistently scored against the big teams this season with goals against Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, Man City and a brace (should've been 4) against Spurs.

While Defoe has struggled against the big teams and padded his tally out against the lesser teams, including 5 goals in a 9-1 win over Wigan.

And when you add into the equation the petulance and poor discipline of Defoe (biting, stamping plus a red card vs Pompey) then you have to wonder why Defoe is even being considered ahead of Bent

God knows why Heskey is deemed to be a 'cert' for the trip when he's not even starting for Villa and only has 3 goals to his name.

Now we just have to wait and see if Capello will pick the team on form, not player popularity, like he stated or if he'll disregard his own philosophy and stick with players from the 'fashionable' teams.
