Jamie Carragher will miss the first 2 months of the new Premiership season after undergoing knee surgery in America.

Liverpool Boss Gerard Houllier said the operation was a success but the recovery time for Jamie was considerable.

Carragher, who was expected to go to the World Cup, will be out for about four months.

"The operation in America was a success but Jamie will not be available for pre-season," Houllier told the Liverpool Echo.

"I expect it will be about four months before he is available to play again.

"He needed surgery to repair the patella tendon. The problem was his kneecap but the operation went well."
