£10 million man El Hadji Diouf scored 2 goals against Southampton on his home debut. Liverpool went on to secure all 3 well earned points and win 3-0.
Diouf scored after only 3 mins to get Liverpool off to a great start. Heskey burst down the left wing and fired a cross to the back post for Diouf to slot home. Michael Owen had a goal chopped off for offside after a Danny Murphy free-kick went close. Hyypia also came close when he had a good effort cleared off the line by Chris Marsden.
The second goal came when and Abel Xavier long throw was flicked on by Heskey to Diouf who headed home. Bruno Cheyrou came on for Steven Gerrard and earned the pool a penalty after he was halted down by Wayne Bridges. Murphy stepped up cooly and blasted it past Paul Jones.
Liverpool could have had a fourth had Paul Jones not been alert for Vladimir Smicers point blank shot.
