Despite opening the scoring Airdrie lost five one to a fluent Cowdenbeath side at New Broomfield yesterday, leaving their manager embarrassed.

Airdrie looked good for the opening 15 minutes, a spell in which they took the lead when Ryan Donnelly latched on to a loose ball to smash high into the net from close range. They should have scored a couple more with Donnelly having a shot saved by Bejaoui and the keeper also saving a 30 yarder from Bain.

But after 20 minutes the game turned as Cowdenbeath’s player/manager Colin Cameron took over and starting running the show. It was therefore no surprise when they equalised on 38 minutes, a Linton corner was met at the front by the unmarked Robertson to head in.

There was a bit of a surprise when the Blue Brazil took the lead just in first half stoppage time. Linton finished a sweeping move that involved Brett and McKenzie down the right.

This seemed to knock the stuffing out of the home side and they conceded three more goals in the second half, and were lucky it wasn’t more. The goals came from Linton, Coult and Morton.

Linton should have had a hat trick when McKenzie burst clear of the Airdrie defence and rather than setting up a simple tap in for his team mate he chose to shoot and saw his effort blocked.

Colin Cameron said afterwards he told McKenzie to but a match ball and get it signed for Linton as he stopped taking home the on from the game on Saturday.

Home boss Jimmy Boyle wasn’t so upbeat after the game, “I am embarrassed to watch my team beaten by a team that worked harder and wanted it more.

“That is two weeks in a row the team who wanted it more and worked harder than us has beaten us.”
