The Caledonian Stadium pitch failed a 10am pitch inspection after heavy overnight rain, giving Rangers a chance to go top with a win over Dundee Utd.

This is the second time this season an early kick with Celtic being cancelled at short notice at Inverness, after their recent Scottish Cup tie was called off on the morning of the game.

This time it is down to a waterlogged pitch only two hours before kick off, which would mean most travelling Celtic fans would have been well on the way. Many may even have stayed overnight.

Celtic flew up last night rather than travel by coach, after their journey home the last time was upset by snow on the A9. This will mean more expense for the club and the fans when the game is replayed.

It will also put pressure on the SPL to come up with a date to fit this game in ahead of the split, with this game meaning a lot to Inverness who are currently a point behind Motherwell.

The bigger question is how does this continue to happen despite a number of pitch requirements in the SPL regulations.

Motherwell have been fined for their pitch issues, but St. Johnstone, Dundee Utd and Inverness have now had a number of games called off this season without any punishment. Maybe they need to have a look at the reasons for all these call offs and make a decision…..
