Cup holders humbled at Fir Park

Dundee Utd were completely out played and out fought by Motherwell and crashed out of the Cup they held.

Motherwell got off to the best possible start in this Cup replay by taking the lead after only 8 minutes. John Sutton’s head flick sent Jamie Murphy clear at the left edge of the box and his low left foot shot left Dusan Pernis helpless.

It could’ve been two only six minutes later, this time Muprhy was the provider sliding Franny Jeffers through but Pernis saved his angled drive at his near post.

But for a long spell after this United took control of the midfield but without managing to trouble the back line never mind Darren Randolph in the Well goal. The only real chances were coming at the other end.

Murphy cut in off the left wing, leaving Scott Robertson for dead once again, and his low shot was turned round the post by Pernis. The second goal did come in the 36th minute. Jeffers and Steven Hammell played a one two from a throw in.

The full back’s cross was flicked on by John Sutton to the unmarked Chris Humphrey who smashed the ball high past the helpless Pernis.

United immediately made a tactical switch by moving Jon Daly back to his familiar striker role from centre back. But even then the only chances were for the home side, with Pernis saving from Humphrey and Tom Hateley seeing a free kick slide inches wide of the post.

Well started the second half on the front foot and could’ve been three in the opening stages with Murphy sending a shot just wide and Sutton heading weakly at Pernis.

The third came in 63 minutes, Jeffers got a through ball from Jennings slipped his man and drilled a low shot past Pernis from the edge of the box.

Well saw the game out comfortably from then, with Randolph making his first save in the 90th minute, when he turned over a dipping shot from Scott Roberston from the edge of the box.

No one could have seen this result coming as Motherwell bossed the game from start to finish and if they had won by more no one could have complained.
