Gareth Southgate has revealed Middlesbrough will need to take a long, hard look at themselves this summer to find out why they have performed so badly at times.

Boro's deserved draw at Manchester United yesterday goes alongside holding Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium and beating Chelsea at the Riverside in the plus column for the campaign.

Much of Southgate's planning will depend on whether Mark Viduka and Jonathan Woodgate decide to remain at the Riverside.

Viduka's crucial equaliser proved his value to the Boro cause, while Woodgate turned in his usual effective performance.

With his loan deal from Real Madrid due to expire in the summer, Woodgate has some key decisions to make about his future.

However, while a chance to play in European football would no doubt be high on Woodgate's list of requirements, Southgate has not given up hope he can persuade the England international to remain with his home-town club.

"I have no idea what the situation is at Real Madrid but Jonathan knows what we want to do," said Southgate.

"He is enjoying his time with us. He is ambitious and we have to show him we are as ambitious as he is.

"He knows the changes I want to make to take this club forward.

"We are fortunate to have him and we would like to keep him but he has lots to think about."
