manchester city, have bid to hold the eufa cup final, at the new state of the art city of manchester stadium, for season 2004 or 2005 Uefa will decide later this month whether City have been successful in their bid to stage the Uefa Cup final in 2004 or 2005.

Six other English clubs - Aston Villa, Southampton, Sunderland, Leeds, Liverpool and Newcastle are also in the running, though City will be hoping that the outstanding success of last year's Commonwealth Games will persuade Uefa to plump for the City of Manchester Stadium.

A potential stumbling block could be that this season's Champions League final is being staged at the swamp and the European authorities may be reluctant to hold two finals in the same city in quick succession.

This year's final will be played in the Olympic Stadium, Sevilla in May.
