Wright-Phillips saves England U21 blushes

Shaun Wright-Phillips scored his first international goal for the England U21's in last night's 1-1 draw with Yugoslavia. England were trailing 1-0 until Wright-Phillips scored in the 80th minute.

Shaun Wright-Phillips spared David Platt’s blushes last night when he scored an 80th minute equaliser for the U21’s against Yugoslavia at the Reebok Stadium.

Wright-Phillips was only on as a second half substitute for Arsenal’s Jermaine Pennant despite his early season Premiership form.

The goal was an angled drive from the right hand corner of the penalty box and should give Platt food for thought when selecting his starting line up for the U21 European qualifiers.

Yugoslavia had taken the lead on 41 minutes and looked like holding on for the victory until Wright-Phillips intervened with what was his first international goal.
