Burnley 1 Leeds United 0

By Burnley FC
April 9 2016

The Clarets piled the pressure on the chasing pack with a vital 1-0 win over Yorkshire-rivals Leeds United.  Scott Arfield's goal after just 60 seconds proved to be the difference between the two sides in the tense Saturday lunch-time kick-off at Turf Moor.

And with five games remaining, both Middlesbrough and Brighton knew they too would need to keep winning to remain on the coat-tails of the leaders.

And what a start it was from the Clarets, who grabbed the all-important goal after just a minute.

From Tom Heaton’s goal kick, Sam Vokes’ flicked-on to Andre Gray, who found Arfield to his left.

And the Canadian international took a touch and found the bottom right corner with a fine strike.

The visitors then went in search of an instant reply, and almost grabbed one for a decent save from Burnley’s captain.

A cross from the right was half-cleared by the Clarets, falling nicely for former Leicester defender Sol Bamba.

His half-volley from the corner of the box was dipping, and Heaton was equal to the testing strike, parrying wide.

A quick Burnley counter could have seen the Clarets assert a two-goal advantage after just five minutes.

A fine piece of skill from George Boyd deep in his own half and clever ball found Gray on the halfway-line and the striker turned provider once again, wonderfully finding the surging Matthew Lowton down the right flank.

The full-back was quickly hunted down however by Bamba, forcing an early strike which was routine for Marco Silvestri.

I would like to see Boyd and Arfield rested and Kights and the ex-Watford winger brought in. Darikwa would also add some spice and give Lowton a rest. We have some tough games coming up and Leeds doesn't look like one of them.

P/as poor from the Clarets ... Need to improve drastically in the second half or Leeds will eventually get a decent chance

For all the moaning on Tuesday I thought we played better against Cardiff than Leeds but one of our chances went in

All about opinions, I thought we were better today, especially in defence. And for 10 minutes towards the end we even looked a good team again, until Sean took Gray off and invited Leeds onto us. No idea why he did that, we were well on top at the time.

Four points,Leeds, goal apart, were the better side today, Boyd is fluffy. we were better when Marney came on.....we were weaker when Gray went off.Just my opinion.

I think Defences would fear Gray and Barnes more than they fear Gray and Vokes.
Just my humble opinion.

As much as I dislike SAF, this truly is squeaky bum time isn't it? We are playing badly, but winning ugly. Last time I knew we would go up after Scotty equalized at Watford with a whole slew of games left. This time with only 5 games left? not so sure.

Next game Brum. That's all we have to worry about - and another squeaky bum.

By the time we start our next game we could be 5points behind as Middlesbrough play twice before us Also i know SD doesnt like to change a winning team but at this point we need fresh and fit legs and we have got plenty of them on the bench who are keen to show what they are made of fighting fit to get a game

18 games, 12 wins, 6 draws, 34 scored, 10 conceded.

Same 11 every game.

Just hope Jones and Vokes are OK for Saturday, think Jones just felt ill, sure they will be.

Same 11 please - anything else would be insane.

"Squeaky bum time"

Really? Honestly?

I'm absolutely loving this, simply turning up at every game, even away games, knowing you've git a result.

Winning the title would mean the world to me but I can honestly say I'm neither worried nor nervous in the slightest .

It's all in your own heads.

Or in this case Chris Woods' head, he missed two absolute sitters with his.

Still like Cardiff bouncing one off the crossbar when it was easier to score, it just shows we're going up, promoted teams always get the breaks.(Sm13)

Second best......draws and wins.It is more likely we will play well in the next games.Anyways it's better than cruising to the title or whatever.Barnes will probably score one of those impossible goals at just the right moment.450 or so mins to the title or the real squeaky bum playoffs.

Sean will tell you quite openly, we don't play for draws, we aim to win every game. So that record, good as it is, means Sean has failed to achieve his objective in 6 of the last 18 games. So it's clear, we're under-achieving in around one third of our games even on a good run, so there's room for improvement, there always is.

It's looked to me for some time now that we need more mobility, pace, dynamism in the team, and that's precisely what Barnes and Marney brought when they came on against Leeds. And almost immediately the performance improved, we got on top of Leeds for the first time in the game and they were on the back foot. There is absolutely nothing to fear, nothing to lose from playing Marney and Barnes, both good experienced players at this level, both fit into our system seamlessly. I really can't believe you're fretting about the possibility of Marney and Barnes starting MH, you know what they can do, you know they fit in, what's got into you ?

If they improve the level of performance, and they did on Saturday, then they should play, simple really.

Brian O'Neil
11/04/2016 00:17
Barnes is a good all round football player,he also roughs the opposition up good style.Marney can share or carry some of Joey's legs.It seems very strange or unusual for a Burnley side having these options in the closing stages of a season. There will no excuse if it is not used to best advantage.

I couldn't care less about Boro, they can have top spot for me, happy to finish 2nd to them. Couldn't care less about Brighton either, they can have top spot as well, happy to finish 2nd to them.

What does worry me is Boro AND Brighton, especially if Brighton win at Forest tonight, if they both keep on their roll then we could be looking at the play-offs.

If it does go down to the wire then we have the advantage, they can't both get 3 points on the last day, win at Charlton and we gain at least two points, possibly three, on one of the other two.

I hope it's the same as it is now on the final day with all 3 involved. They play each other so only one can win anyway but it adds to it.

If it's like it is now on the final day then we've been a PL team for five days already and the celebrations are long finished. The Charlton game will just be a jolly in London, unless you're like MH and actually care whether we finish first or second, me I couldn't give a FF.

ManHug
12/04/2016 11:33
The ideal scenario for me, if I could pan the season out now, would be a scenario where all 3 clubs could finish top, all 3 could be second and all 3 could be third.

That would be amazing.

Something like this:

Burnley 91
Boro 90
Brighton 90

Going into the last game.

I'm still wondering what we're going to do with all that money in summer. Triple the wage bill, buy 3 £10m players and we still have plenty of the TV moolah left over.

Maybe they could give us all our ST money back. Why not, everybody else at the club is going to be quids in, and they could easily afford it.

What about us fans !!!!
