Two goals from Jim McIntyre gave Dundee United a safe passage into the third round of the CIS Insurance Cup with a 3-1 win over Morton. United winger Andy McLaren opened the scoring for the Tannadice side in the 10th minute before McIntyre grabbed his first 26 minutes later.

Ton striker Peter Weatherson grabbed a 74th-minute goal for the visitors to ensure a nervy finish to the game before McIntyre wrapped up the win from the penalty spot after a foul on Collin Samuel six minutes from time.

United opened the scoring on 10 minutes after a period of sustained pressure resulted in a series of corners.

Morton lost their concentration as Jim Paterson whipped in a cross from the right-hand side and McLaren was left in plenty of space to stoop low and nod the ball past Craig Coyle.

The visitors almost equalised seven minutes later through John Maisano, but his 20-yard drive smacked back off the bar with Tony Bullock scrambling.

United doubled their lead in the 36th minute through McIntyre, who finished off a neat move involving McLaren and former Rangers midfielder Charlie Miller.

Paterson almost added to their goal tally in the 58th minute, but his dipping shot was scooped over the bar by the goalkeeper.

Weatherson then raced on to Scott Bannerman's through-ball into the left channel and fired a low shot past Bullock in the 74th minute.

But United made sure of their place in the next round with four minutes remaining when Samuel went down theatrically under a challenge from David MacGregor.

Referee John Rowbotham had no doubts about awarding the spot-kick and waved away the protests of the visiting players before allowing McIntyre to casually chip the ball into the net from 12 yards.
