United have told Alan Combe his contract will not be renewed when it expires in the summer.

Combe was reinstated to the first team after two years in the wilderness as soon as Ian McCall took over as manager in January.

But Gallacher, who is understudy to Robert Douglas for the national team, soon regained his place.

And McCall is not now looking to bring in a replacement of Combe's calibre.

He said: "The days of Dundee United carrying two top-class 'keepers are over."

The news will be sure to be welcomed by Gallacher, whose fiancee Belinda suffered a miscarriage and his father Jim was diagnosed with cancer at the time of McCall's arrival.

Combe has been linked with Bradford, where he had a spell on loan last season, and Hibernian.
