Smith, once in charge at Bristol City, said to the Evening Leader: “It’s got all the ingredients to be something of an epic. On the other hand, it could be a boring 0-0! That’s the beauty of football. You never know how things are going to turn out.”
City, however, are surfing the crest of a wave with 10 straight wins. “I’d like us to go on a 10-game unbeaten run,” said Smith. “They’ve done it in the best possible way by winning all 10.
 

“That takes some doing and obviously you have to respect a side who can produce that sort of sequence. Ten straight wins - at any level - is some going. They’ve got a lot of first division players there who are playing in the second division.
“But I’m sure they won’t overlook the fact we have the best away record in this division. In fact, it’s better than clubs in the first division and the Premiership.
“That, like their 10 wins on the bounce, also counts for something and I’m looking forward to going back there because I really think this has the makings of a good game.”
 

Wrexham manager Denis Smith has no injury problems but recalls centre-back Brian Carey. He missed last Saturday’s 1-0 win over Barnsley because of a hamstring injury, Carey comes back at the heart of the defence, Carey was expected to miss the clash at Bristol tomorrow but comes back to the joy of Denis Smith, although teenager Craig Morgan deputised well.

Smith said: “Morgan, as you say, did well for us against Barnsley, but I just feel we’ll need big Brian’s experience and know-how tomorrow. They’ll come at us, there’s no doubt about that, and we’ll need experienced heads in there when they do.”
Wrexham are also able to name Carlos Edwards at right wing-back. He played for Trinidad against a star-studded Brazilian side in Port of Spain on Tuesday and came through unscathed with will be music to the ears of all Wrexham fans.

“It’s nice to have a full complement to choose from,” said Smith. “You need that when you’re up against the sort of opposition we’ll face tomorrow. It will be, as I say, a good game but nothing can be taken for granted - by either side.
“If you go back a month, everyone had given Plymouth the second division title. But look at the situation now. . .”
 

Captain Darren Ferguson and Jim Whitley’s experience will also be crucial in midfield as Wrexham aim to douse City’s fire, Jim was man of the match last week and hopes to retain the form of the Barnsley match. Ferguson leads by example and Whitley backs him up with Stephen Thomas always capable of scoring, as he did at Grimsby Town.

Smith also goes for an unchanged front two of Chris Llewellyn and Chris Armstrong. Llewellyn’s winner against Barnsley was his fifth league goal of the season and his tireless running is endearing him to many fans - maybe possibly should have warranted himself a call from Wales manager Mark Hughes, but he must keep his work rate high and the he will see the benefits.
“Izzy works really hard,” Denis said “Fair play, the lad has stuck at it and now that Chris Armstrong is also getting in games, they look a potent partnership.”
