"There was a lot more vibrancy in our play and our closing down was much better than it has been in previous games," the Dragons manager said.

"We haven't got great players but what we've got to do is be a team.

"When they are playing as a team and they work as hard as they did at Grimsby, then we're always liable to get results."

Chris Llewellyn opened the scoring for Wrexham from Carlos Edwards' cross, Carlos set up Steve Thomas soon after and then had a hand in Chris Armstrong's 67th-minute strike.

Phil Jevons headed home a consolation for the Mariners with 17 minutes left, but Wrexham comfortably held off the home side for their first league points of 2004, which was much needed.

"Goal-scoring has been a problem all season, Chris Armstrong has hardly played so it was pleasing he got one," Smith added.

It was Wrexham's seventh away win of the season - the best record in Division Two - but Smith wants his side to start reproducing that form at home if they are to move higher than seventh in the league.
