An impatient Welshman hopes he is not running out of time at Wrexham. Matty is out of contract at the end of the season and so far has made only two senior starts. Matty Crowell, 19, is out of contract at the end of the season and so far has made only two senior starts - and it’s getting to him.

He told the Evening Leader -“It is frustrating and I am impatient by nature. I want to be playing week in, week out, but to be fair in the last couple of weeks the lads have been doing quite well, apart from last Saturday at Chesterfield.

“I played at Luton and I also played at Stockport in the LDV Vans Trophy. I thought I did okay in both games and, to be fair, the gaffer and Kevin Russell have both had chats with me. They’ve told me to keep on doing what I am doing in training and in the reserves and my big chance will come.” But Bridgend-born Crowell has got itchy feet and he does not want to become number 16 sat on the bench every week.

He said: “I want to play in front of crowds and show what I can do. “I hope that doesn’t sound like I’m blowing my own trumpet. But I have got faith in my own ability and I think it’s only right that I have got that.

“You have to believe in yourself in this game. That can make such a difference to the way you play and also it helps your attitude to the game. When I came here, the manager told me he hadn’t brought me in to keep me sat on the substitutes’ bench.

“Denis Smith has been very fair with me. He’s had me in the office for little chats, helping me with advice on certain aspects of my game and I appreciate that.

“But, as any player will tell you, there’s no substitute for playing and I’m no different. I believe I am good enough to get in the side - and stay there. I came here to play and that’s what I want to do.

“I accept that I will probably have to sit tight for a while and wait until my big chance comes. I just hope it comes sooner than later. I can’t wait to get in the first team and do well for the club.”

Matty is a good pro who wants to see Wrexham in the first division. “I think we’ve got a really good chance,” he said. “If we can stay clear or injuries and suspensions, we should be okay.

We’ve only got a small squad in terms of numbers, but I believe there’s no reason why we can’t be up there come the end of the season. Put it this way, there’s no one in this division who frighten us.

“I know we played poorly at Yeovil in the FA Cup and again at Chesterfield. But when you look back at our league performances generally this season, no team has really turned us over. I’d love to be involved in the cut and thrust of going for points to get us up there.

“It hasn’t happened yet on a regular basis for me and a few other lads. But the manager knows we’re all dead keen to get into the side and, from my own point of view, when my chance comes I’ve got to take it.”
