MANAGER Denis Smith emerged from the visitors’ dressing room at Huish Park to try and explain to the nation just why Wrexham had performed so poorly against Yeovil Town: ''People who watch us normally know that we don’t concede goals, yet at the end of this match we were almost happy to get off with only four against.

“It was indiscipline and it has cost us dear, but to be fair Yeovil have worked hard.

“We’ve come up against teams that have closed us down in the past but we have bypassed that. We should have been closing them down but we didn’t work as a unit.

“It’s been an embarrassing display.

“I just don’t know where that performance came from. It is very, very difficult to understand, how a team that has played well for the last six months or longer can play like that - it just doesn’t make any sense to me whatsoever.

“Now is maybe not the right time to dicuss things to much, but we’ll have a long chat about it on Monday, as we have a game on Tuesday and we’ve got to get it right from there.

“There are no excuses, maybe taking Brian (Carey) off was a mistake but I felt we needed more pace at the back. Then for them to score in the first minute of the second-half knocked us back and killed us.

“There was some abysmal defending afterwards and not just from those at the back, we just didn’t look a unit. There were too many spaces and they were winning too many second balls.

“I can only apologise to the poor fans that have travelled down here today and also to those fans watching on the television. They must wonder what we do in training – because looking at that, I’m also wondering!

“I have tipped Yeovil to do well this year, so they didn’t surprise me, as they are a good side. But then again so are we, but you won’t think so looking at that today!

“It’s maybe a case of back to the drawing board and becoming hard to beat, instead of trying to be pretty. I don’t know - but there is a lot of hard thinking to be done between now and Tuesday…”
