MIDDLESBROUGH manager Steve McClaren has dismissed speculation that links defender Gareth Southgate with a move to Old Trafford as a temporary replacement for suspended Rio Ferdinand. Rio Ferdinand has been banned for eight months following a missed random drugs test forcing Manchester United to look for a temporary replacement for the former Leeds United and West Ham centre back.

Boro boss Steve McClaren however has dismissed the rumour that Sir Alex Ferguson is planning to table a move for the seasoned defender Gareth Southgate.

"I think it's just pure speculation," said McClaren, "I've had various chats with Sir Alex today and it's never been mentioned.

"There's been no contact and no talking and Gareth Southgate is an integral part of our team."
