Tuesday 15 October 2002. Forfarshire Cup, Links Park, Montrose. Montrose 2 Dundee Utd XI 3.
Montrose fail to defend their trophy after being 2-0 up at half-time
Montrose, the holders of the trophy, were on top in the first half of this Forfarshire Cup tie and deservedly went in at half-time 2 goals up. The first came when Steve Kerrigan headed through a ruck of players in the box. Combe saw it late and fell on the ball, but he was behind the line. The second came as Graham McCheyne poked the ball home with the keeper stranded from a couple of yards after good work on the left. Robbie Henderson was Montrose's lone striker for spells in the first half and he looked impressive, although he did seem to tire towards the end of the half.
Utd were a different prospect in the second half and pressurised Montrose's defence. Their players were making dangerous runs in and around the box and they scored three which left Montrose with around 15 minutes to pull it back. The best Utd goal was Jamie McCunnie's mazy solo run and shot coming in from the right wing.
Montrose came so close to tieing the game when Come dived acrobatically to parry a shot at his top left hand post in the last five minutes of the game, but it was not to be.
