Aden Shannon scored a brace against his former club as Welshpool Town beat NEWI Cefn Druids 2-0 at Maesydre on Friday evening. Despite the visitors twice hitting the woodwork in the first period it was the hosts who took their chances to secure all three points.

Welshpool climbed to eighth in the league with a 2-0 victory over struggling NEWI Cefn Druids. The win was not as comfortable as the scoreline suggests, with the hosts more clinical finishing proving the difference in an even contest on an awful pitch.

The opening exchanges were fairly even and Druids went from nearly taking the lead to falling a goal behind within 30 action-packed seconds. Following a goalmouth scramble Mike McLean's effort hit the bar, when the striker really should have found the back of the net. The ball was cleared and Aden Shannon beat Druids keeper Louis Mackin by lifting the ball over his challenge to give the hosts a 1-0 17th minute lead.

Druids again hit the bar before the interval, when Anthony Williams' beat keeper Grant Dawson to the ball only to be cruelly denied by the woodwork.

The second half continued in a similar vain to the first with possession largely confined to the centre of the park with neither side able to gain a hold on the game.

As Druids pushed for an all important equaliser Welshpool caught the Ancients on the break. Good wing play from former Bangor midfielder Gary Roberts set up Aden Shannon, who's first time shot beat Mackin to score his second goal against his former club, and more importantly all three points for his new team.
