The Swans were held to a goalless draw at The Vetch Field today by Cheltenham Town, further hampering our chances of automatic promotion. However, there can be no complaints about the result after a very poor performance that almost saw us lose the game.

| Karl Connolly's effort, which hit the post mid-way through the second
half was the closest Swansea came to breaking the deadlock in a game which
either side could have won with the odd goal. Lenny Johnrose started at left-back with both Michael Howard and Leon Hylton out injured. Stuart Jones replaced the suspended and soon to be departing Richard Duffy at right-back. In midfield Roberto Martinez started for the first time since returning from injury while Kevin Nugent partnered Lee Trundle up front. With Nugent winning just one or two aerial battles all game and Trundle having another off-day, the Swans rarely threatened Shane Higgs in the Cheltenham goal. The arrival of James Thomas for Nugent towards the end of the game saw the Swans create a few more openings with Trundle bringing a flying save out of Higgs with a close range volley. It's now three games without a goal for the Swans and it is not hard to see why. Swansea constantly played the long ball towards a supposed 'target man' in Kevin Nugent who when contested never won the ball. James Thomas won more aerial battles in his short time on the pitch than Nugent did all game and one wonders why last season's top goalscorer cannot dislodge the former Cardiff City player from Flynn's starting eleven. |
