Former Manchester United defender Gerard Pique says his Barcelona side have hit "rock bottom" after a staggering 8-2 defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

The Catalan club crashed out of the competition in emphatic style against a ruthless Bayern side.

It ends a very disappointing season for Barca, who were also beaten to La Liga by Real Madrid and knocked out of the Copa del Rey at the quarter-final stages by Athletic Bilbao.

For a club with expectations as high as Barca, such a seismic defeat to one of their biggest continental rivals is unthinkable - and ex-Red Pique offered a stark assessment.

"We have hit rock bottom," he admitted. "This is not the first, nor the second, nor the third time. We are not on the right path."

He added: "The club needs changes. And I'm not talking at the level of the coach or the players, but structurally the club needs changes of all kinds. "We must bring in new blood to change this dynamic, and if necessary, I would be the first to leave."

Pique made 23 appearances for United in just under four senior years at the club, before making a £5million switch to the Nou Camp in 2008.
