Werder Bremen place doubt on imminent Chong loan move

Will loan happen?

An anticipated long-term loan move for Manchester United's Tahith Chong to Weder Bremen has been thrown into doubt by the Bundesliga club's sporting director.

Dutch midfield man Chong is widely regarded, but United are eager to get the player game time and first-team experience.

The 20-year-old has made 16 senior appearances for Manchester United, and played against a host of Football League clubs for United's Under-21 side in the controversial Football League Trophy competition.

However, amid much competition for places at Old Trafford and reports of more midfield reinforcements to come, a lengthy loan move away could help Chong's development as a player.

Bundesliga outfit Weder Bremen have been very interested in a loan deal for Chong, and reports suggested an agreement of a switch was imminent - potentially for as long as two seasons.

However, club chief Frank Baumann has moved to cool rumours of the move. It is reported United won't act until their Europa League adventure is over, while Werder wish to bring Chong into their pre-season training more quickly.

"There is still a lot to be clarified," he said, to German tabloid newspaper Bild. "I’ve been in business long enough to know that a transfer like this can fail because of many things.

"It has not yet been decided and there is still no final agreement between the various parties. But we’re working on winning Tahith over so that he can play in the Werder jersey this season."

Werder Bremen finished 16th in this season's disrupted Bundesliga season - ending up in a relegation play-off against Bundesliga Two outfit FC Heidenheim. In a dramatic finale to the campaign, Bremen stayed up on away goals thanks to goals from Norman Theuerkauf and Ludwig Augustinsson.

I am surely not alone in thinking Chong is more than a touch over-rated? From what I have seen of him he needs to improve in a number of areas.

Massive potential but his limited number of appearances show he has much to learn?
