Widespread reports this morning are claiming that Town are close to appointing former Wolves, Sunderland and Republic of Ireland boss Mick McCarthy as their new manager.

The Barnsley born man has been linked with the Town job ever since it was vacated last week following the decision to part company with former boss Paul Jewell was made on mutal grounds and several media outlets are this morning claiming that a deal will be done very shortly. The bookies seem to agree with McCarthy now 1/8 with Skybet.

McCarthy will no doubt be seen as the kind of experienced figure that Town's chief executive Simon Clegg spoke about at the supporters club AGM which took place last week, when he stated he wanted an experience man and that the next manager would be a low risk appointment.

If as widely expected, McCarthy does get the Town role, it is likely that he will link up with Terry Connor, his assistant from Wolves, whilst former Town skipper Matt Holland is rumoured to be in the running for some kind of role on the backroom staff of McCarthy's coaching team.
