New England boss Roy Hodgson was given an all English send off at the Hawthorns last weekend, as fans arrived sporting England shirts and flags for his final game in charge against Arsenal.  But the close season will bring no period of rest for Hodgson, who immediately set about naming his Euro 2012 squad.

The 23 man squad was named on Wednesday, after days of speculation.  Steven Gerrard was named Captain, and the big surprise absentee from the squad was Rio Ferdinand, with Hodgson going for Chelsea's John Terry in preference.

Other surprise call ups include England rookies Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain of Arsenal, and Norwich City keeper John Ruddy, who will have to fly out to meet the squad with his wedding to first consider on the 2nd June.

The full squad is as follows:

Goalkeepers:  Joe Hart (Manchester City), Robert Green (West Ham), John Ruddy (Norwich City).

Defenders:  Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Phil Jones (Manchester United), John Terry (Chelsea), Joleon Lescott (Manchester City), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Ashely Cole (Chelsea), Leighton Baines (Everton).

Midfielders: Theo Walcott (Arsenal), Stewart Downing (Liverpool), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Steven Gerrard - Captain (Liverpool), Gareth Barry (Manchester City), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), Scott Parker (Tottenham Hotspur), Ashley Young (Manchester United), James Milner (Manchester City).

Strikers: Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Danny Welbeck (Manchester United), Andy Carroll (Liverpool), Jermain Defoe (Tottenham Hotspur).

On standby: Jack Butland (Birmingham City), Phil Jagielka (Everton), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Adam Johnson (Manchester City), Daniel Sturridge (Chelsea).
