Struber

So at Barnsley we yet again find ourselves in search of a new manager and with the usual expectations that our best players will depart shortly before the window closes and with no chance of finding suitable replacements.

I stopped myself from writing about the situation as it unfolded as I wanted to think about the entire situation properly before giving my view.

One view that I certainly have is that I am glad Ritzmaier and Ludewig have gone. They were clearly Struber’s men and one of two things have happened particularly in the case of Ritzmaier.

Whoever the person is who makes the majority of the decisions regarding incoming and outgoing players, has decided Ritzmaier just isn’t good enough and now his mate has moved on it’s time to move him on. Or Ritzmaier himself has said he doesn’t want to stay without his BFF.

I would have said the same has happened with Ludewig but Schalke coming in for him completely blows away that theory and what Murphy said.

As for Struber himself, like with the Stendal departure, I am very split with my opinion. I wanted rid of Ritzmaier and Ludewig but I come somewhere in the middle with Struber.

First of all I would like to thank Struber for the end to last season and the big part he played in the super reds retaining our Championship status.

Secondly, I don’t blame him for wanting to leave but I’m also not sure I am upset about his departure. This could change however depending on who eventually is given the job on a permanent basis.

I fully agree with Struber’s comments regarding the lack of ambition by the board and that we are extremely likely to be battling relegation every season so why would any manager want to stay?

On the flip side I don’t think Struber can place the blame solely on that for our poor results thus far this season.

Despite the lack of spending on proven Championship players and the sale of Brown, I still think there are games we should and could have won this season if Struber had picked different players. And I say that regardless of the system, which I also felt needed changing or at least tweaking to give us more creativity.

Throughout his time in charge he continued to play people out of position. I still also feel that if he had made better team selections last season that we would have been safe before the last game of the season. I take nothing away from energy and intensity he had us playing with which was a big part in us staying up. And perhaps another manager wouldn’t have had us playing like that to give us a chance. But I stand by the fact that we should have finished higher under him had his team selection been better.

Picking his favourites and best mate Ritzmaier have let him down and he has ruined Woodrow who will probably still leave before the deadline.

I also think Struber would have struggled to keep us up this season as I don’t think he would have changed the personnel and tactics he needed to.

I do think we will be in a relegation battle no matter who takes over but I also feel a different approach to how we play along with picking the right players in their right positions will give us a sniff of staying up, unless we sell a few of our better players between now and the window closing that is.

For this reason I think the decision for Struber to move on is the best choice both for him and for the team.

Mixed emotions really with what we did last season but I have little doubt he would have been sacked by Christmas if he had stayed and I think he knew it was now or never if he was to keep his reputation intact.

As for the new manager, despite Darren Moore being the favourite last time I looked, I think we will end up with another foreign coach. That is not necessarily a bad thing depending on who it is but I feel it is a bad thing that the board only seem to look down that route when in my opinion it needs someone who knows the league.

Whoever planted Eddie Howe’s name must be chuckling to themselves. I may stand to be corrected but there’s surely no way he would come to Barnsley.

One thing I do know which frustrates me is that we take longer than any other club to appoint a new manager when ours leaves.

The board will be hoping the caretaker does well so that they can have a cheap appointment.

Anyway on to Saturday and hopeful of a first win of the season.
