Liverpool Football Club announced that they would like to build a new stadium on Stanley Park - less than 300 yards from the present stadium. Plans for a new stadium, which would hold 55,000 supporters, have been presented to Liverpool City Council after the club investigated no fewer than seven different sites - including expanding the present ground - over the last two years.

The new stadium will cost between £60m and £70m to build and could even be ready for the start of the 2005 season. Original plans to construct a new 70,000-seater stadium could have cost the club £120m and a decision was taken by the club to not let the cost of building a new ground interfere with Gerard Houllier’s ability to compete for the best players to put out on the pitch.

The stadium will still be named ’Anfield’ and there is no intention of selling the name.
