Even though they fielded two separate teams Motherwell eased to a fine 3-2 win over Morton at Cappielow last night.
Having already had three games under their belt Morton made the better start and Lee Hollis had to look sharp to make a fine diving save from the lively David O’Brien. O’Brien was denied not long after when he was sent clean through but Hollis stood up well to deny him.
It was no surprise when the home team took the lead, a Peter Weatherson free kick was flicked past Hollis by defender Andy Graham.
This seemed to give the Well side a kick up the proverbial and a special goal from Jamie Muprhy levelled the scoreline before the break. Hammell and Law combined on the left to release the striker who unleashed a bending shot whose only destination was the postage stamp corner.
Motherwell were getting into the game more and more as half time approached and did have the ball in the net again but Saunders was adjudged to be offside when he headed past Colin Stewart.
There were eight changes to the side at half time with the younger members of the squad given their chance to shine in the second period, and they took the chance with both hands.
They scored only six minutes after the re-start, a great cross from Saunders into the corridor of uncertainty between defender and keeper gifted Jamie Pollock a simple tap in from 6 yards out.
Lee Hollis was called into action on a couple occasions to keep the youngsters in the lead, he once again denied O’Brien and the Campbell. He was beaten with 17 minutes left when Well were caught napping at the back giving Andy Jackson all the time in the world to pick his spot to beat Hollis.
Both sides had chances before Gary Smith sealed the win in the last five minutes. The impressive Steven Lawless skinned the full back before standing up a cross for Smith to head home at the back post.
This was one of the most entertaining pre-season games I have been to for a long time, with both sides giving it a go, with many players looking to impress on both sides.
It was also helped by not have the usual plethora of trialists, with there being only one out of 40 players on show, a sub keeper for Morton.
As the cliché goes it was a good work out and the players will only benefit from it, as will many of the youngsters…
