Former Well men in news down south

McLeish

There could once again be four former Motherwell players managing in the English Premier League next season, with Alex McLeish looking to seal his move to Aston Villa.

The Aston Villa job has put two former Motherwell players in the spotlight in the last week. Firstly it was Roberto Martinez who had a short spell with the club back in the 2001/02 before being released when we went into administration.

Martinez has proved to be hot property given his outstanding work with both Swansea and keeping Wigan in the top flight. He was interviewed for the vacant Villa job but decided to show some loyalty to Wigan, a rare trait in modern day football.

Next to be linked with the post at Aston Villa is former player/manager Alex McLeish. McLeish steered us to second place in his first season in 1994/95 with Tommy McLean’s side. Sadly when he had to build his own side he took us closer to relegation before moving to Hibs.

After spells at Hibs, Rangers and Scotland he ended up at Birmingham where he has had mixed success. They have been relegated twice while he has been in charge but on the other hand winning their first trophy for years.

The Villa fans don’t seem to happy to have him coming on board with protests taking place outside Villa Park. He seems to have split them by first of all being a former Birmingham City Manager and also not being too highly rated!

The other two manager’s who will line up in the EPL next season are Owen Coyle at Bolton and Paul Lambert who has steered Norwich into the top glight on the back of two successive promotions.

Even in the Championship Billy Davies has been making news after being sacked by Nottingham Forest…..
