A goal in each half from John Sutton help Motherwell clinch a deserved win over Celtic at Fir Park this afternoon.
Motherwell got off to the perfect start when Chris Humphrey was allowed to get through thanks to a mistake from Mulgrew but his shot was blocked by Majstorovic in the first minute.
They did not heed the warning and Sutton was allowed to nip in when Mulgrew missed a long ball from Gunning. He managed to knock the ball past the keeper and then roll the ball into the empty net from an acute angle.
The remainder of the first half hour saw Motherwell on the front foot with a Murphy header providing an easy save for Forster, and Humphrey blasting wide at the back post.
Stokes did finally produce a save from Randolph with a shot at the front post, and then the keeper was called upon to turn a Brown shot round the post as Celtic looked for an equaliser.
Motherwell then made the best possible start to the second half, firstly Shaun Hutchinson saw a header crashing off the underside of the bar and bounce clear. But four minutes after the re-start Well were awarded a penalty when Lasley was pulled down by Izaguirre.
Sutton took the kick again this week after scoring against Hamilton last week, and he blasted his effort high past Forster leaving the keeper helpless.
Celtic’s best effort came in 54 minutes when a Commons free kick was saved low at the post by Randolph. But the play was still generally flowing towards the Celtic goal, and Humphrey and Murphy had shots blocked, with Murphy’s being blocked by team mate John Sutton.
Celtic did have one final chance in stoppage time but once again Randolph was up to the task of saving Commons dipping as it headed towards the top corner.
This was an outstanding win that was thoroughly deserved with Motherwell dominating every phase of the game.
