Chairman John Boyle tonight’s AGM that he would be standing down as Chairman before the start of next season.
Boyle took over when he bought out the major shareholding of John Chapman back in 1998. In that time he has overseen a number of highs and lows as we spent big to achieve little apart from a spell in administration.
Since then we have been a well run club that has been in Europe three times and appeared in a League Cup Final and can be seen as a model club for others our size to look at and copy.
Boyle has handed his shares back to the Motherwell board to allow them to decide what to do with them what they will. This will either see the share ownership broadened or could open the door for one major owner to step in.
How will Boyle be remembered by people for his time as Chairman? Many believe we owe him a debt for ensuring the club survived the spell of administration but many believe it was his mistakes that landed us there in the first place.
One thing for sure is that since then he has made sure the club has ticked over and in some ways over achieved on the pitch and therefore is owed a debt of gratitude.
We can only hope the new board make the correct decisions going forward and ensure the club is managed as efficiently as it has been since the middle of the 2000s.
