Penalty miss seals Lanarkshire derby defeat

Motherwell lost the Lanarkshire derby yesterday thanks to an early goal and penalty miss.

Accies started the game well and created a couple of early chances before Haselbaink turned Forbes to fire home from 18 yards on the 15th minute.

This was probably the worst thing that happened for the game as the visitors then looked to hold on to the lead and use whatever spoiling and time wasting tactics they could.

We were awarded a penalty just before the break when Canning bundled Blackman over just as he was about to turn Humphrey's cross over the line. Hateley took the kick but his weak effort was easily saved by Cerny low to his right.

The major talking point was the decision of referee Thomson not to red card Canning for denying a goalscoring opportunity, in fact he didn't even show him a yellow! This summed up the afternoon for the referee who made one wrong decision after the other.

To the point he appeared to allow Canning and McLaughlin to bully Gow and Blackman all afternoon, which gave the advantage to the donkey in the battle with the thoroughbreds!

We coudn't break down the Accies rear guard in the second half with only one real opportunity created, when Gow saw header cleared off the line by Imrie.

We wasted chance after chance from free kicks and corners to put pressure on the Accies and in the end deserved no more than we got from the game.
