Motherwell made it back to back home wins thanks to an own goal in each half, although the scoreline flattered United over the 90 minutes.
We got off to the best possible start by taking the lead in the opening minute. Alan Gow slipped past Scott Severin on the half way line and then fed the ball to Nick Blackman who then played in Jamie Murphy on the left. Murphy’s angled drive was saved by Pernis but the ball rebounded off Severin and over the line.
Motherwell were playing some great stuff in the opening stages and should have been much further ahead through efforts from Murphy, Blackman and Gow all saved by Pernis.
United couldn’t muster a shot until the 28th minute when a Daly volley was hit at Randolph. Even after this Murphy had another effort before the break but again Pernis was on hand to save.
Well also made the best possible start to the second half when a Hateley free kick was headed over Pernis by Reynolds but United scrambled clear.
Five minutes after the break it looked as though Well were going to suffer from another second half collapse when Craigan was adjudged to have used his arm to clear the ball from a Kenneth long throw.
David Goodwillie took the kick and sent Randolph the wrong was to slot the ball in to the keeper’s right.
Well were still the side who were pushing forward after the this and Gow and Murphy once again causing problems for Pernis in the visiting goal.
The second goal came in the 76th minute, Hateley switched the play from left to right to Chris Humphrey whose cross was fizzed into the six yard box and Dillon was forced to turn the ball over the line with Nick Blackman waiting to pounce.
Motherwell saw the game out comfortably to inflict United’s first away defeat to since May last year, outside Ibrox or Celtic Park and hold on to 3rd place.
