Motherwell today "parted company" with manager Jim Gannon after only six months in the job. The news broke today at 1pm when the club issued a statement which quoted club owner John Boyle as saying, "It is deeply regrettable that the board has felt it necessary to part company with the manager at this stage of the season, but we have reached a situation where we felt there was no other option.

"Generally, results on the field have been satisfactory since Jim Gannon was appointed, and the Board wishes to make it clear that today's decision is not related in any way whatsoever to recent results.

"Over the past couple of months it has become abundantly clear that the manager was not fully committed to the club and, despite our best efforts, he repeatedly refused to sign a contract.

"Relations between the manager, staff and directors deteriorated to the extent that the situation became untenable."

He has been replace temporarily by Youth Development Manager - Gordon Young - until a new man is found on a permanent basis.

Gannon started his tenure in a positive was by revolutionising the squad and bloodig a number of youngsters. Recently though results have been poor, with the inability to beat ten men or hold on to a lead.

There have been constant rumours about the relationship between the manager and players, which seemed to have come to a head in recent weeks and forced Boyle to act.

Although it would also appear Gannon was disillusioned with the raw material he was working with, a fact that led to his outburst after the game on the Saturday when he took a swipe at the quality of his sqaud.

Who will now come in, the media are already running with the list of usual suspects, but I hope Boyle goes for a safe pair of hands and I wouldn't be averse to someone like Jimmy Calderwood coming in - we'll just have to wait and see!!
