Motherwell defeated a Manchester United reserve side by 1-0 at Fir Park this afternoon to win the Sit Matt Busby Shield.
There was a touch of disappontment for the 3500 crowd that turned up at Fir Park when they realised the United had sent a reserve side made up of young players with no recognisable name amongst them.
By the time the 90 minutes were over the Motherwell fans in the crowd didn't really care as they will be able to look back at a scoreline that reads Motherwell 1 Manchester United 0.
Motherwell dominated for most of the game and scored the winner after 53 minutes when Giles Coke played a one two with John Sutton to split the United defence wide open and allow him to drill low past the keeper.
The game had value for Motherwell as it allowed Jim Gannon to give a 90 minute run out to new signings Yassin Moutaoutakil (who looked promising at right back) and Lukas Jutkiewitcz (who still has a bit to go to win me over!).
He also took the chance to introduce another youngser in the shape of 17 year old Jamie Pollock, he looked liveley and was unlucky to see a 25 yard strike well held by the keeper.
Who knows we may be able to look back in five years time and say we spotted one of the talented United youngsters when they played at Fir Park in this game!
