Motherwell succeeded where they failed in four attempts last season, by beating Kilmarnock in the SPL!

Jim Gannon's new young side never looked like losing this game as they dominated from start to finish.

It took until the 14th minute for them to make the opening after Hutchinson and Muprhy had tested Bell in the visiting goal. O'Brien fed Sutton at the edge of the box and the striker took a nice touch before drilling low past Bell.

Well dominated the half without looking like scoring for the remainder of 45, but just before the break they were awarded a deserved penalty. O'Brien was the architect again as he cut in off the left leaving Old in his wake, the full back had only one option but to pull him down.

Ross Forbes smashed the ball high past the despairing dive of Bell for a deserved half time lead.

Killie had one great chance in the second half but the much vaunted Kevin Kyle, who was well marked throughout, headed over from only 8 yards out.

Well sealed the win minutes later when Hutchinson smashed in from 15 yards out following a half cleared corner. Killie got a consolation through Hammill in 88 minutes.

While the fans went home happy the manager was looking for more!! As he said after the game, “When all the emotion settles down, it is a fantastic start at Fir Park with a great result but we are slightly disappointed as it could’ve been more. But the lads played really well and they were solid and had a threat to them all the way through. “I think we could have done better on the counter attack, young Slaney and Jim O’Brien had a couple of counter attack and didn’t take advantage. We told them we need to be more ruthless to find that fourth goal, but that may have been unjustified.”
