As we head into the season we have a very small squad, this is worrying many Well fans already, despite a high number of trialists turning out for the club during pre-season. Midfielder Keith Lasley feels our small squad could actually be a good thing?!?

Many Well fans are now getting worried we have one of the smallest squads ever as we head into what could prove to be a hectic season. Mark McGhee said last night we only have 14 players available to start on a regular basis, this despite giving trials to seven players already in pre-season.

We are short at goalie, with no cover for Graeme Smith and in front of him we have only four experienced defenders.

Midfield is actually reasonably healthy while up front we have Porter and Clarkson being backed up by young Jamie Murphy and Mark Archdeacon.

At today's photo shoot Keith Lasley was upbeat about our small squad, "A lot of other teams were chopping and changing from week to week last season, whereas we had a pretty much consistent 13 or 14 players that were playing week in, week out and I think that was a massive bonus for us.

Motherwells Keith Lasley threatens during the Clydesdale Bank Premier League match at Fir Park, Moth

"When you are playing with the same players week in, week out, you start to gel a lot better.

"I think that helped us and hopefully if we keep everybody fit, we can do as well as we did and if not better.

"We went through last year with a small squad, although people would maybe say we were a bit lucky with not getting injuries.

"But we are trying to add to the squad. Players will come in, but players who are here just now are more than capable of performing."
