The last of the first phase games in thios year's 50 over competition.  We face Lancashire and have the position of still being able to qualify IF we win AND Warks win AND Glos win AND neither of them do it with a better NRR than us.  Winning is our only priority today.  if the rest falls into place then we will cntinue.  If they don't we'll assess a 4:4 record with all the wins at home and all the losses away.  That is IF we win.  Lewis has won the toss and put Lancashire in.  Sav Perera returns in the battnf and Migael Pretorius returns to the bowling.  Let battle commence.

Metrobank Game 8 v Lancashire @ Taunton Wednesday 11 August 2026

Lewis Goldsworthy wins another toss and decides to bowl first at Taunton.  We go into this one in a 'must win position'  the rest of what must happen for us to continue in this competition is in the match introduction.

The side for today is;

Vaughan, Perera, Lammonby, Goldsworthy (c), Thomas, Connell, Church (w), Pretorius, Theedom, Shaw, Langridge

We go back to the earlier opening partneship and see Sav Perera return to the batting line-up we also rest Jake and Jack (probably for Essex next week? Though do they need over a week?) Kian Roberts and Theo Lamey also miss out.  It's a gorgeous day and there were lotsof people in the queues at just before 10 this morning.

If you are watching on the livestream, the wicket is almost in the foyer of the Caddyshack today with a rope boundary on the Somerset side of the ground today.  Very very short East side boundary.

Josh Shaw opens from the MT to Jennings and Hurst (after Jennings takes a single) 3 for 0 after 1.  At the River Miggy P. The first boundary comes in the third and it is 16 after 4 overs.  It's 35 after 6 as the Lancs guys open their shoulders a little.  The 50 arrives during the 9th with a bottom edge cut to the CA from Hurst who moves to 28 from 27 while his partner is 20 from 25.  A better straight drive over the bowler's head comes in the same over and they finish it at 56 for no loss thanks to a good boundary save by Pretorius

At the end of the 'Powerplay' Lancashire do not look in all that much trouble as they complete it at 6 runs per over moving to 62 for 0.  Hurst is leading but both opening bats seem to have found their way in this game and could make us pay for deciding to bowl first.

JT Langridge is introduced from the MT for the 11th with his side desperate for a wicket.  Finally the breakthrough comes as Hurst drives off Archie Vaughan (who has come on at the River to replace Pretorius) in the 14th over and goes to a very very good diving catch from Migael.  83 for 1 as Bohannon take his place and gets off the mark with a single.  Jennings is still looking ominous and the visitors are still moving alone at just over 6 and over.  Their highest List A score against us is 310 (in a 45 over version of this format) so that is most definitely on today.

After 15 overs the score has moved to 93 for 1.  The 100 arrives in the 16th off Langridge but Vaughan gets Bonannon for 8 in at the start of the 17th stumped by Ben Church coming up the wicket to the wrong ball.  101 for 2 with Marcus Harris replacing him.   

Theedom comes on to bowl from the MT for the 19th but his first goes for 12 so he needs to tighten up to be effective in this one.   Jennings goes past 50 from 54 balls (8 fours) in the next over at 117 for 2.  Harris is not wasting time as he moves into double figures in the same over and they reach 20 overs with 121 for 2 on the board.

Ben Church is looking better and better as this series goes on.  he has certainly played himself into his postion over these 8 games.  A good stumping is followed up by a very good diving save.  It also give confidence to others as James Theedom gets a full slower one through and bowls Marcus Harris for 26.  He's worked damn hard for that wicket so well done to James.  138 for 3 in the 23rd brings Rocky Flintoff to the middle which sets up Flintoff against Vaughan next over.  The young man is off the mark with a boundary from his second ball.

Somerset goes for spin at both ends with the 25th as the skipper brings himself on at the MT.  The 150 arrives off a misfield from Archie in the covers with Jennings on 58 from 66 and Flintoff on a run a ball 6.  At the halfway stage the visitors have amassed 154 for 3.

Jennings opens his shoulders in the 27Th and takes Lewis for a four and a six to move himself into the 70s and his side into the 160s.  The 300 plus is definitely on for this innings.  

The 29th brings Tom Lammonby into the attack at 172 for 3.  His first goes for 12 courtesy of a Flintoff six off the last ball.  Jennings is also going for it as he takes another six off the first ball of Vaughan's 30th over as he bowls out/  His 10 overs garner 2 for 49.

193 for 3 at 30 - a doubling of the score is 386 and with only 3 wickets down gives them a chance to push this over 350 at least.  

Josh Shaw changes ends for the 32nd - he has gone for 44 from his 6 at the end of it.  Meanwhile Rocky F has moved into the 40s with a six into the scoreboard while his partner is into the 90s and this is looking very unsatisfactory at the moment.

The 100 partnership arrives (from 68 balls) at 238 for 3 with Rocky on 49 from 36 and Keaton on 96 from 93.  There are 16 overs to go in this innings so there are some runs to come one would imagine as JT returns for the 35th.  Flintoff's 50 arrives first with 4 fours and 2 sixes in his 37 ball half ton.  Jennings goes to 100 at 244 for 3 from 97 balls with 10 fours and 3 sixes. 

Pretorius returns for the 36th and is immediately sent to the Trade Nation boundary by Jennings to start his search for a second 100 with a boundary.  The Lancashire 250 is the next milestone and it comes up with the third ball of the over. 

James Theedom comes back for the 39th and the 150 partnership arrives from the third four in the over at 291 for 2 with 11 overs still to come.  The 300 comes from a straight six into the CA from Jennings taking him to 133 and the score to 301 for 3.  It has moved to 302 with 10 overs to go.  James Theedom is then taken to the cleaners by Flintoff as the bowler goes past 50 in his 5th.. The young Lancastrian goes past his best in this tounrament with 89 after taking the young Somerset bowler for well over 12 in this over.  Theedom has 1 for 60 from 5 as Lancashire move to 321 for 3.

Jennings also surpasses his career best white ball score with a six at 142 from 119 off JT in the 42nd.  The 200 partnership comes off a free hit from 119 balls with a 150 from 121 with 14 fours and 7 sixes from Keaton Jennings as well.  It is all going to pot out there as Langridge leaves the field and probably won't return because he looks absolutely knackered.

Josh Shaw come back on at the MT for the 43rd with 3 to go.  Presently something over 400 is most definitely on unless something quite drastic changes in this game.  To be fair, this pitch is giving the bowling attack absolutely nothing so the question becomes "why are Somerset bowling on it first in a situation that required them to hold their NRR in check as much as they could"?  It really is a pitch to bat on if you win the toss and we won the toss.   However, after 50 overs in the field in quite oppressive heat we will need to bat after the break with a starting RRR of 8 plus.

JT has returned to the field and will continue to bowl taking the 44th from the River.  The Lancs 350 arrives with the first ball of it but he gets Jennings caught very well on the boundary by Josh Shaw for a career best 155 with 15 fours and 7 sixes at 352 for 4 after a partnership of 214 in 21.1 overs.  Singh replaces him and is off the mark with a single.  Flintoff takes a single to move to 99 at the end of the 44th.  A decent over from JT who moves to 8 overs 1 for 64.

Rocky moves to a maiden senior 100 from 65 balls with 8 fours and 5 sixes - always an important time in a young cricketer's career.  355 for 4 and he is not stopping as he moves to 114 in the next over from Shaw. 

With 5 overs to go Lewis brings himself on at the River because he has few options.  Singh hits him for six off his first and drives for four off his second.  His third goes over the roof into the Tone.  He comes back but it is getting embarrasing now and people are starting to talk about this being the worst performa nce in a 50 over game at Taunton.

Migael is on for the 47th and they are swinging at everything now because they have nothing to lose. He gets Singh with a leading edge out to Connell who catches him in the deep for 20 at 392/5 and out comes Jack Blatherwick.  He is off the mark with a six into the Ondaatje car park - just about sums it up.  that is their 16th six.  Lancashire's highest list A score is 406 for 9 as they move to 404 for 5 in the 48th with their 17th six off Langridge.  A new record score arrives in the same over as they hit their 18th six into the Somerset stand.

Two overs to go at 416 for 5 with Flintoff on 123 from 75 and Blatherwick with 16 from 4.  Rocky goes for that 123 caught by Archie Vaughan off Miggy a career best with 10 fours and 7 sixes at 417 for 6.  In comes Shetty.

Miggy bowls out with 2 wickets for 78 and the last over starts with the visitors on 420 for 6.  Josh Shaw takes the last one and his first two balls go for four and a single equals the second highest score against us in List A ever!!  A six over the Gimblett scoreboard moves Lancashire well past that score.  This will be the highest list A score at Taunton EVER.  The last score is 443 for 6 with the twentieth six of the innings and Shaw ends with 10 for 96!!  23 off the last over!!  They do not pass the worst score ever which was 454 at Bristol against Gloucestershire.  It has not been a good day for us or our NRR.  We need quadruple 'Nelson' for victory and discussions are all about the margin of the Lancashire victory before a ball of the reply is faced.

The Reply

Somerset's opening pair walk out needing to score at 8.8 an over and it is a new opening partnership is Johnny Connell and Sav Perera they face Tom Bailey in the first over.  A maiden over moves the RRR to 9.1 and Aspinwall takes the first from the River.  The first runs off the bat come from a Sav boundary.  It's 4 for 0 after 2 overs.  

Connell is caught on the toe and is LBW to Aspinwall for 9 at 19 for 1.  In comes Tom Lammonby and after 5 overs he has helped move the score to 32 for 1.  Aspinwall then gets Perera LBW for 5 at 33 for 2 to bring in Goldsworthy with 411 still needed.  

At 9 overs the Somerset score is comparable with the Lancashire one which was exactly the same at 46 but the visitors hadn't lost any wickets.  The first change arrives as Shetty takes over from the River for the 10th.  The 50 arrives in the 10th with Lammonby on 16 from 14 and Goldsworthy on 10 from 15.  The RRR is now at 9.8 and the DLS is presently 135.  They end the first 'Powerplay' at 53 for 2. 

Balderson takes the 13th over and the home side move to 72 for 2 by the end of it.  The RRR is over 10 however.  By the 15th and after a possible strangle of the captain down the legside (he hit it but the keeper couldn't keep hold) plus a 50 partnership between the pair at 85 for 2 they have lost Goldsworthy for 24 caught on the Caddyshack boundary by Jack Blatherwick off Balderson they have welcomed Josh Thomas into the middle and the game is probably moving towards an inevitable conclusion rather than a massively surprising victory from the jaws of defeat.

85 for 3 after 15 is a long way from 444 after 50 and the number of bats who can make a significant difference to this game are decreasing.  Somerset's biggest List A score was in the Natwest against Devon at 413.

The 100 arrives with a solid cover driven four from Lammonby in the 17th over.  It moves him to 37 from 34 while Josh has 8 from his 5.  Blatherwick comes on at the MT for his first with the 19th.  Lammonby goes to 50 from 45 balls with 8 fours at 135 for 3.  Josh Thomas then sends the first six storming into the Somerset to bring up the 50 partnership from 30 balls at 142 for 3. 

21 overs sees spin from Harry Singh for the first time at 148 for 3.  A second single brings up the 150 and drops the runs required below 300.  But immediately after that Josh Thomas rashly swipes at one and is bowled for 42.  150 for 4 sees Archie Vaughan come in as the 'last gasp' in a chase of this total.  Tom is definitely looking at this seriously as he moves on to 68 from 56 whil Archie adds 3 from 7 and at 24 overs Somerset are in fact ahead of the Lancashire score by a margin.  Unfortunately it is the wickets that will be the home side downfall as Lammonby falls for 68 caught by Harry Singh off Aspinwall at 170 for 5.  His Metrobank series comes to an end with success with the bat but that wicket may very well be the first deathknell of this chase as Ben Church comes in with 274 runs still needed.  Aspinwall now has 3 for 20 in his 4.2 over spell

Archie is the next to go without adding to his score caught by Shetty bowled by Singh. at the same score which brings in Josh Shaw at 185 for 6.  Ben sixes Aspinwall into the Caddyshack to bring up the 200 in the 29th over and moves the RR to 244 with a RRR of 11.6.  Ben has 23 from 21 and Josh has 4 from 5.  To end the 30th, Josh takes 10 off Singh with a straight six to the Botham and a boundary to the Somerset Stand.  212 for 6 needing 232 from 120 balls.

But the hopes are dashed again as Ben Church looks to go high and doesn't have enough as Bohannon catches him for 24 off the bowling of Balderson.  James Theedom is the next man in at 212 for 7 and he is also keen to take the ball on.  After 33 overs they have moved to 236 for 7 with Shaw on 22 from 12 while Theedom has moved on to 16 from his 12.  But James is then bowled by Balderson as the ball squeezes under his bat and he departs for 18 to bring Pretorius into the fray needing 203 from 15.4 overs.

Balderson finishes his 6th with 3 for 43 and with 15 overs left the score is 243 for 8 and we are 200 runs from a tie.  Josh puts the RR under 200 with a massive straight six into the Botham off Singh.  195 needed for the win.  A single brings up the 250 for 8 with Shaw on 33.  This is his highest score for Somerset at 34 jjust before he is bowled by Balderson at 252 for 9.

JT is the last man in  and he makes a fist of getting something though it is in a lost cause.  He has managed to move to 7 with one boundary when the agony is finally ended as Migael is caught by Jennings off the excellent bowling of Aspinwall (finishing with 4 for 42 from his 8 and a bit overs) for 11m mostly coming from 1 six and Somerset finally succumb in the 40th over for 269 all out. 

An absolute thrashing for the home side which will mean they hold up the table they were hoping to qualify from (and probably would have done given the other results that went their way).  The Metrobank is over.  The home record of wins has been broken and we end with a 3W 5L record.  A little less than we cold have done but probably what our inconsistent performances deserved.  Well played to the Lancastrians in a game where the decision to bowl first is still pretty incomprehensible.  A loss by 174 runs was the result and a pretty emphatic one at that.

Somerset now have a 8 day rest before we return to the CC1 tournament.  There will be information coming out about injuries as the rest of the sqaud return and also information about possible international signings for the end of the season though it is certain that they will NOT include a return for Matt Henry or Jordan Hermann as those rumours have already been scotched by officials and news of South African call ups for the next international series.

On to a home game against Essex next Thursday and a possible bit of discussion about what the laast 8 games have told us about the strength and depth of our squad of players.

The equations are all still going with the 8th game of the series. I don't get why we are still in this but the minimum we ought to be aiming for today is a win against Lancashire. If that happens, let the rest fall where it may and we'll go from there I assume.

We are back to the 15 man squad for this one;
Vaughan, Perera, Lammonby, Goldsworthy, Thomas, Connell, Church, Lamey, Theedom, Pretorius, Shaw, Leach, Roberts, Ball, Langridge

Given the success of the Surrey game with this squad and then the pretty disappointing game in Northants with the smaller version it will be interesting who will be in the elven tomorrow. Some of the guys will be hoping it is the start of the next stage of their career.

3 must plays for me of those who have been rotated , Leach , Pretorius and Perera . Perera has a batting average of 38.6 in the competition compared with Jonny Connell at 15.7 . For some reason Connell hasnt missed a match and Perera has missed the last 2 . If.the selection mishaps continue then we will know that management really do have no real wish for progression to the knock out stages .

Certainly think that they had decided we were out before the Surrey match (so did I to be honest) and so checked out a number of options.

The Surey win probably geve them a little bit of false confidence and so they went with much the same for Northants and got their backsides handed to them without Pretorius to help Ball - I think Shaw has made progress but not enough to be honest.

The Perera situation will probably progress one way or the other depending on tomorrow'a batting choices. Not sure what the hell is happening there.

Whether we win or not tomorrow I think we are pretty much cooked at 50 ovver level for 2026.

I wonder if they have decided they are not going to give Perera a contract for next year?Connell has done very little, but is the better fielder. May be Perera has now an offer from another county? It is all very odd. . With Craigos wife about to give birth, the rotation of Ball and Pretorius is sensible. Craigo might not be available for the matches against Essex and Sussex. This could end any hopes of a county championship challenge.I understand their baby is due in three weeks?Lots of ifs and buts as usual. I despair if Shaw ends .up playing. Somerset members have put up a lot with the lack of sincere commitment from the management in signing quality replacements for those that have left. Langridge has shown in the Metro he has improved but is way off first eleven championship cricket at the moment.It would be a nice finish to beat Lancashire, and for those picked in the competition it has been a good experiance.

Disappointed Perera has been omitted in last couple of games as he has done very little wrong. He gave us solid foundation at top of order to post big score.

If Craigo’s wife is due to give birth soon it is even more important that management recruit second overseas bowler. This is our best chance of winning the County Championship since 2019. Do whatever it takes to get Matt Henry to stay on after the Hundred even if it is for 4 of the 6 matches.

Simon you are correct we haven’t replaced Ben Green or Kasey Aldridge. Josh Shaw is essentially replacement for Josh Davey.

Morning people

There will be an injury update on the website sometime in the next couple of days.

The stuff I can glean so far is that Thomas Rew has 'done something' to his ankle - no infor about how serious that is.

There will be an update on the Alfie Ogborne injury but it won't say he is going to bowl agian this season

On another point - it looks like Sav Parera will play today but don't quote me on that until 11am.

In six appearances so far, Josh Shaw has taken seven wickets at an average of 40 apiece & a scoring rate of 5.87.

The merits of giving him a three year contract remain well disguised.

It will also NOT be Jordan Hermann after South African sqaud announcements today put him there and not here!!

Given that Archie has been our best bowler today , the omission of Jack has once again been a mystery. Likewise I can’t believe Jake wouldn’t have done a better job than one of the quick bowlers used .

Well probably collectively one of the worst displays of bowling in a One Day Cup match in living memory. For a Somerset bowler to be only 4 runs short of conceding 100 runs , Josh Shaw , is quite simply unacceptable. Well done to Lancashire for a fine batting display , but honestly that was pretty awful.

Well it shows the cupboard is pretty empty. I think it is time for Hurry to go.There is a balancing act, but the lack of recruitment of another decent seamer in the winter is now showing we have too. small a squad of experienced players. We are heavily hit by the hundred. But is Shaw really the answer.Somerset members deserve better than this.Getting thrashed does not help young players.The team selection in this Metro cup has also been questionable.

Difficult to find any smiles from the Somerset faithful today. We are just very fortunate to have Lammonby here. Several other players have not met the grade in this competition. The youngsters at other counties have performed much better. And rewatch Shaw's last over before the internal, terrible death bowling.

To end on a positive note after admittedly a very disappointing campaign ... I am increasingly enjoying Trego's commentary, knowledgeable, well-informed, insightful, always willing to praise the opposition, self-deprecating and witty. The younger men who sometimes occupy the box could learn a lot from him, not least that excessive talk about football or pop music is not what we tune in for (though they could hardly be as bad as those two men from Leicester a few matches ago).

A game where at no point batting did we look like we were going to get anywhere near Lancs total . Lammers and Thomas made some effort but apart from that it was pretty average at best . Plenty to look at but trust we don’t pursue a contract for Jonny Connell as an average of 14.8 doesn’t merit one .

I echo LoL's comments on Trego. Yes I'm sad enough to rewatch some of the 'highlights' from the stream. It's free, available worldwide and available retrospectively. And the other county games are also available on what was a fascinating day for the 50 over cup.

In contrast, my BBC feed (not free) is full of reports on the other competition in which I have no interest at all. Some of them from several days ago. Very little on the 50 over cup.

Tom Lammonby has once again come out of this tournament with large amounts of credit.

Lewis Goldsworthy is a better short form spin bowler than we sometimes give him credit for and Jake Ball was pretty useful in all the games he played.

Ben Church looked a more confident player at the end than the beginning so it did him no harm.

James Theedom looked better than last year and now knows what is required at the front end of a bowling attack - work to do there.

JT has promise and a decent heart for the fight - still a bit wild.

Archie was more usevas a bowler than a frontline bat and the jury is probably out about Migael's overall cintributuons.

There was something in Sav Perera, we missed him when he didn't play but is he worth a longer punt?

The rrest of the players? A bunch of performances consistent/inconsistent, some showing poetential but all of them needing work still to be permananent first team contracted resources. The jury isn't out on Josh Shaw I'm afraid from comments I consistently read online and hear around the ground.

Grizz's comment up at the top of this thread pretty much says it all. Whatever promise the man has, despite some real effort to do it in these games is still quite well camouflaged if you are looking for a reason he has a 3 year first team professional contract with us as the only new signing of the 2025/6 winter. It is a little on the baffling side one has to admit.

We missed Fin and Alfie. They would have given more balance but an inconsistent campaign where the Lancs game will probably stay in the mind longer than the Surrey one.

Think we were better than bottom of the table but the analysis should be on why we ended up there.

Crazy that had we won yesterday we would probably have come about Third 🤣🤣🤣

Highlight of the day! I could say watching Lancaster bat.

No, my highlight of the day was having Jos Buttler's mother sit with me for a while, I haven't seen her for years, it was so good catching up on the news.
