Sunderland have made their first signing of the summer transfer window by acquiring the services of Critstian Riveros from Cruz Azul in Mexico. Riveros is a good friend, and international teammate (Paraguay) of Sunderland defender Paulo Da Silva - both of whom will be playing in this summer's World Cup.

Riveros, a midfielder with flair, began his career playing for a number of Paraguayan clubs including San Lorenzo and Asunción-based sides Tacuary and Club Libertad.
 
He moved to Cruz Azul in July 2007 following a great Copa Libertadores campaign with Libertad.
 
Riveros has represented Paraguay on 45 occasions, scoring eight goals.
Speaking about his move to Sunderland he said: "The league is very competitive and Sunderland have shown trust in me as a person and as a footballer. The history here is good and I'm delighted to be joining the club."
 
"Paulo told me a great deal about how great the club and the fans are and told me a lot about the place and the city. I'm really happy to be able to join this club."
Riveros is a big fan of English football and is delighted to make a move to the biggest league in the world.
 
He has been an avid watcher of Sunderland since beginning negotiations and has already tuned in to a number of games involving his new club.
 
"I've watched many games on the TV especially in the league, some in Paraguay, many in Mexico," he explained. "They used to show the games before we played and I've watched Sunderland a lot since I first had contact from the club.
 
"I watched the game against Manchester United which unfortunately we lost but I've managed to see quite a lot of the games."
 
And when questioned on what he can bring to the side, the creative midfielder simply stated "a great deal of professionalism."
 
"I'm a player that when I'm on the field I try my best to play my part for the team and to provide a great work ethic and professionalism to help support the performance of the side," he added.
