Saw a 2 part movie about the Great Train Robbery last week, part one from the robbers point of view and part 2 from Tommy Butler's Flying Squad point of view. When Butler arrested Bruce Reynolds, the alleged 'master-mind' down in Bournemouth some 3 years after the trial, Reynolds warned Butler that the squad, by demanding 30 year sentences, had guaranteed that criminals would now arm themselves. Up to that point, apparently, there was an un-written agreement that if no guns were used in a crime/robbery, and assuming no one got hurt, 7-15 years would be the sentence. Because the train driver got coshed and had to take early-retirement, and because the heist was so audacious Butler et al wanted the maximum sentences. Reynolds was probably prophetic in his warning. Not suggesting that the treatment of the Great Train Robbers alone was the cause, but the certainly upset the status quo
