I had a brief Instagram exchange with Ryan Taylor, perhaps a bit tounge-in-cheek, but he posted a thank you to sky sports for having him on as a pundit last weekend and I replied :
“Never mind all that! Lace up for Tranmere again in January.”
I was delighted that he replied at all but said:
“Still waiting for the phone call (wink emoji)”
I jokingly said I’ll get Mickey on the blower but what do you chaps think? I suspect he could do a great job for us either at fullback or in mid. Being a free agent since the start of the season I suppose some people may have reservations about about sharpness, age or cost of his wages. But his technical ability was always top notch. I’d say he was a cut above the likes of koumas, Hume, and Mahon who didn’t have a great swansong with us. This time of course the club is headed in a much better direction all round.

Thoughts?

how old is he now - in his mid 30s or so. was his last club port vale. some people might say if he is not good enough for league 2 - is he good enough for league 1. if he was a free agent and proved himself to be 100 per cent fit he could come in as a squad player but not first choice.

Yea 35. He seemed to manage quite well in league one with vale and fleetwood recently. I have a feeling some of our current lads struggle with the pace of the game (getting on the ball and making quick decisions as teams are closing us down much quicker than in league 2) obviously having played most of his career in the top flight I think he’s more than capable in that area, versatile, and his dead ball delivery and crossing may give the likes of Ferrier and Payne more to go on. Either way I think we need to see some movement for new players during the window to address this.

Would rather Taylor than Woods.

Purely for his set piece delivery. We must be the worst team in the league at set pieces, both scoring & conceding!

Not sure if it’s it’s poor delivery or that none of our players can attack the ball, probably a combination of both.

just out of interest - my first match watching Tranmere rovers was in approx. 1981 and I could probably name a full team plus subs of players who have had at least two spells playing us.

Get him in check out, if he looks good sign him, if not say no thanks.

A reconoitre of his current abilities and fitness by Tranmere staff would cost nothing, but could possibly lead to a useful signing.

Then I ate his Liver.......... with some baked beans and a can of coke.

Sign a 35 year old player who hasn't played since he was given free transfer by Port Vale at the end of last season that's a great idea still i suppose we could wheel him on for the set pieces as for the comment he is better than Woods not now he aint.

IMO our biggest downfall is set pieces, we concede so many and rarely score from any, we must be bottom for goals scored and conceded in the league with regards to set pieces.
A dead ball specialist is probably worth 10-15 points.

As for Taylor being better than Woods, yes he is I would say given his pedigree. Without looking I bet Taylor has played more games in the last 2 years than Woods, who was injury prone when we signed him and has only played what....3 games or so!

I suppose it’s ok to sign a 37 year old to play on the middle of pitch, and a 34 year old who again had barely played for over a year.

Not so bothered about Taylor's age, more about whatever the reasons are that he still hasn't got a club.

Not good enough, would be another gamble. He’s sat on the sofa because hes too old, same reason as Bobby Charlton

Well as he has not resigned and played a few that's hypothetical and all playes are a gamble, even expensive top level ones, regardless of games played injury history etc.

I
His age ,inactivity and injury record are not hypothetical.
We need signings that provide better evidence that they would add something beyond what we already have.

Sorry but this is taking me back 5 or so year. In a relegation battle and looking at old players who may come and save us. There seem too many on here that appear to believe that this is the position we should be in and are happy with that. For me it’s a very unsettling flashback and I really do believe that should we go down this season, then there is no reason what so ever why we couldn’t go down again next season. For me we should be sitting comfortably in mid table, I won’t be happy finishing the season 1 point above relegation. that is not a good season as many might say.

Our recent track record on re-signing old players is the one reason I'd give this a swerve.

The two clubs who came up with us - both better supported and at least as well-resourced as us - are in a similar situation to us.
And clubs who plummet into the VNL tend to have far deeper rooted problems than anything we've got. We should know that as well as anyone.
Offer me 20th at the end of the season right now and I'll take it. And if you really do fear back to back relegations I guess you'll take it too. Regroup (as we have done), consolidate (as we're doing) then move forward again (as we're well-placed to do). There's no shame in that - successful armies do it, people who climb Everest do it, etc etc. I'm backing us to succeed in the long game.

I too would be more than happy with 20th place.......

However now we are half way through season and majority of players have had opportunity, I would say we are going down with current squad, just not good enough.

Based on,

-on poor performances against teams around us, especially at home!

-Playing Bolton early has done us a favour and those 3 points and 5 goals look for a lot better reading.

-I believe MK dons will improve, they already have and have got Mason back fit now, they will climb.

Need a CB and CM as a minimum, sort the spine of the team out, stop conceding and I think we have enough goals in us.
