Our debate of the day was the best 11 players to ever play against your team as the only rovers supporter in the office I had a tough task especially with the girls trying to wind me up over rovers too.

Anyway I went for:

Nigel Martyn

Phil neal
Craig short
Gary pallister
Stu pierce

Son
Gazza
Deli ali

Oliver bierhoff
Trevor morley
Gary liniker.

Did well to hold my own however I'm sure theres room for improvement

tough to leave beirhoff out, but out he goes, and shearer in

sheringham might also be a shout

I'd be tempted to put Juninho and Markus Babbel in. They're the main ones that come to mind at the moment!

I remember Rio Ferdinand ,we had just knocked West Ham out one of the cups ,we had homes draws all the way through and he was a guest on tv to do the draw ,he was livid we had beaten them and he was not happy when we got another home tie ,he actually shouted something along the lines of “not another home draw “ ,,another for the legends at Prenton I actually seen Sir Alf Ramsey for spurs FA cup 1952/3 at PP ,should be in there somewhere ,,Fowler ?

Didn't a very young Roy Keane once play at Prenton Park for Notts Forest ?

If I remember rightly he wasn't very good and was totally overshadowed by the great Jim Harvey !!

Gave this a bit of thought and have mixed my team up with some famous world class players and some not so famous world class players, but they all impressed me wen they came up against the Rovers...The lesser known players played a few times against us and some did well keeping us at bay and others often causing us a lot of damage..

GK - Peter Shilton

RB - Neil Cox
LB - Stuart Pearce
CB - Steve Howey
CB - Phil Sproson

MF - Glen Hoddle
MF - Paul Gasgoine
MF - Ray Kennedy
MF/Winger - Brian Marwood

FW - Steve Bull
FW - Craig Madden

Some team that. Brian marwood was one of my favourite players growing up, such an economical winger.

Never saw Kennedy or your left back.

Bull was a phenom. Didn't he go to the world cup after only ever playing 1 season in what would be the championship now?

hi MR G , if I was being honest then 2 of the best strikers ive seen come up against Rovers would be Lineker and Shearer and they would be streets ahead of Bull and Madden, but I did see Bull and Madden a few times against the Rovers and they were both very dangerous, always played well against us and always seemed to score against us...Never in a million years would Phil Sproson be considered a top class world centre back, lol, he was just an old 4th div centre back that played a helluva lot of games for Port Vale back in the early/mid 80s, but he was a good old rival, solid and experienced and we had many a battle with him...I think you are correct about what u said about steve bull and the world cup....Phil Sproson was related to the old Port Vale legend Roy Sproson, he was before my time but I think the likes of Loyden, Fifty and Devon Exile and 1 or 2 others will probably remember Roy Sproson and they might well put him in their best 11 to play vs Rovers..he was a legend at Vale and played about 800 games for them back in the 50s n 60s.

ps..sorry for my comments last night, I had stayed up late knocking the scotch back.

Always used to luv going to Vale Park back in the early/mid 80s, there was always an atmosphere there, especially in the midweek evening games, they had a few nutters then Vale, was always an atmosphere there, never had any trouble but 1 or 2 times it was collars up n heads down when exiting the ground and hoping u wouldn't get spotted lol... the one place where they always came looking for you was Burnley, had to have your wits about you there

some random talents:

ian bogie - port vale supposedly the new paul gascoigne. never hit any of the heights, but maybe did the weight

ricky otto - southend. in the days before youtube you'd oftern hear rumours before games about teams having mercurial talents. ottos was the classic grapevine player. dreadlocks and rumoured to have a machete scar running right down his torso from an altercation with yardies, he was brimming with talent

tommy johnson - notts county . lank ginger streak of @#$%& who bossed games in the slugfest of early 90s lower division football. tormented us both for county and derby

marco gabbiadini - one my favorite ever players. played for a tonne of clubs and was inventive and skillful. my favorite non rovers team is probably the derby side of the mid 90's gabiadini, simpson, kitson, tommy johnson, gordon cowens and i think mark pembridge. @#$%& awesome side.

paul peschisolido - birmingham. back in the day birmingham ran a squad of about 60 players under barry fry. barry fry made harry redknapp look likesteve jobs to his del boy. one of the many forwards he bought was paul peschisolido. he was impish, unpredictable and was knobbing karen brady the who was the chairman of the club. what a liberty.

whittingham was a legend. left the army and went into non league football and was spotted by portsmouth. has an absolute clive allen of season with portsmouth [i think he scored 42 in 46 games] and then villa signed him and played him on the left wing i think haha

I think Frank Lampard needs consideration and possibly Paolo Di Canio for his footballing ability and his legendary refereeing "assault". Michael Owen anyone?

Lampards ability passes me by, don't see him as a great player at all.

Pre Madrid Owen was unplayable. Utterly ridiculous forward in his youth.
