The much-maligned Mustafi is actually superb in Cup competition so far ...

Mustafi is actually just two matches away being a legend or a clown … against Vitoria on 24 Oct and against Liverpool at Anfield in 30 Oct League Cup by keeping two more clean-sheets.

If he offers leadership as a senior player, able to organise the DEFENCE and functions as a catalyst that brings the best out of those youngsters surrounding him, then he is way better than Sokratis and David Luiz.

It I really up to Emery-Carcedo partnership to devise the tactics and skill-sets for the team they are going to field in those 2 no. cup games with the DEFENCE central around Mustafi as the senior player.

With Holding, Bellerin and Tierney not ready to play the entire 90 minutes against the Blades on 20 Oct, perhaps as substitutes to give them a run-in, I will see Emery as giving them the Vitoria game to allow them to clock the minutes to build-up their match-sharpness with 30-Oct Anfield date in mind.

Chambers - Sokratis - Luiz - Kolasinac Back-4 is first-choice and the more minutes they play together, the better will be their understanding which will result in better communication and a more cohesive defensive unit.

Injuries will take their toils come the wintry months from November to February period and it is not bad that the "2nd liner" in Bellerin-Mustafi-Holding-Tierney are gradually building up their match fitness and sharpness playing in UEL and League Cup games from October to December period. It is pointless to rush them into 1st-team now when they are still unbeaten in league games, albeit still leaky with Emery still has the option to gradually groove those 3 players into senior team.

Chambers - Sokratis - Luiz - Kolasinac "Back-4" has 2 games against the Blades and Crystal Palace on 20 Oct and 27 Oct respectively to keep clean-sheet(s) before Emery deems Mustafi, Bellerin, Holding and Tierney ready to step into breach to gradually replacing them in November/December during the break in UEL competition.

All the best to Mustafi as with the current performances of Sokratis and Luiz, both of them are no better than Mustafi.

Those howlers committed by Sokratis and Luiz to-date?
They got away with their wrists slapped only.
If it was Mustafi, pretty sure blood-thirsty Arsenal fans will demand Mustafi must be disembowelled, quartered and hung.

Well we need a large squad to compete across all competitions, so yes he's very useful for the long season. Like every player, he has his good moments.

I agree that he hasn't put a foot wrong yet. But then he's been playing against league two strikers really.

Sadly his performance at Liverpool demonstrates he is not first team material

- until Wenger moves on, they'll always be the also-rans in the major competitions. A club in elite purgatory. Always good enough to make it to the big race, never fast or smart enough to push over the finish line in first place. That's all about the manager. Until he changes, Arsenal fans will continue to celebrate glorious failure.
