Player Ratings vs. Valencia

Cech - 7. Made a good save in the first half and off his line quickly in the second half.

Mustafi - 7. Really good first half and did well overall.
Sokratis - 7. Solid, and he was called into action a few times.
Koscielny - 7. Continues his good form, but you could see he was limping after every run towards the end.

Maitland-Niles - 6. Okay but there is a fine line between being composed and being too casual!
Xhaka - 6. Mixed bag. Occasionally sloppy in possession, but set up the second and nearly found Aubameyang with the pass of the night in the second half.
Guendouzi - 5. Thought he struggled. Wrong decision to start him for me.
Kolasinac - 6. Typical he gets into great possessions but wastes the opportunity, though he did find Aubameyang for the third.

Ozil - 6. Improved as the game went on.

Lacazette - 8. Scored two, worked hard and used the ball well, but missed a couple of big opportunities in the second half.
Aubameyang - 8. Worked hard, made chances and scored a vital third late on. One of his most complete performances for us?

Subs:

Torreira - 6. Looked better when he came on.
Mkhitaryan - 5. Tried to impact the game.
Monreal - N/A. Not on long.

After an awful start where we could've been 3-0 down, we responded well and went in at half time 2-1 up after a double from Lacazette. Nobody would've felt truly confident going to Spain with a 2-1 aggregate advantage. Lacazette missed a couple of chances to extend our lead, and you started to wonder whether we'd regret those misses, but Aubameyang scored late on, making it 3-1 on the night and in the tie.

The way we're playing away from home this tie is far from over, but we're in a great position going into the second leg.

A few thoughts...

In the second half Koscielny was limping after every run. As good as he has been recently this is just further evidence that he is done at the top level.

As harsh as it may be, seeing as he set up the third and all... we could do a lot better than Kolasinac for the money he is on.

I didn't think the Xhaka-Guendouzi midfield was up to it in the first half. Xhaka, Torreira and Guendouzi are all most effective in fairly similar areas of the pitch. Losing Ramsey is a blow and we definitely need to invest in another CM.

interesting. I personally thought that was one of Guendouzi's better games in recent months. Maybe it was becuase Valencia were less physical than most of the english teams but he looked stronger and quicker than he has done. After today I was actually quite hopeful about a Torriera - Guendouzi partnership in midfield next season.

Cech
Ozil
Lacazette
Aubameyang

All did well.

Others basically like the Keystone Cops.

Torreira helped when he came on.

Interesting I thought he looked slow and overran.

Guendouzi was much better, a bit slow on the ball sometimes but overall not a bad game.
Mikky was very important to build up to the third goal, and I felt his coming on reinvigorated us going forward

- until Wenger moves on, they'll always be the also-rans in the major competitions. A club in elite purgatory. Always good enough to make it to the big race, never fast or smart enough to push over the finish line in first place. That's all about the manager. Until he changes, Arsenal fans will continue to celebrate glorious failure.

Koscielny is still a bullet, and his reading of the game isn't a perishable quality. We can't rely on him fitness wise, and I think we should replace him in the first XI, but I'd 100% keep him in the squad next season. Even at 33 I think he has something to offer.

Agree with the ratings overall. Good win, good bottle, good attitude.

I was worried when we went one nil down, but we kept fighting, right until the 3rd goal. More of the same on Sunday and Thursday please lads.

We have rest our best players. Kos, Lacazette, etc. If kos or Sokratis get injured, we are done as far as winning the cup goes.

I consider it a bigger priority cause we will struggle big time in ucl next season unless we find 11/12 players. I'd rather prioritize winning europa than get into the top 4 cause the extra money still isn't going to get us far and we will struggle more having to play first team players in qualifiers.

Id rather it happens with a European cup than top 4. Im ok even if we finish 5th if it gives a better chance of winning europa League
