Pre-season underway
MattySadler 05 July, 2017 07:12
Petr Cech, Emi Martinez, Mathieu Debuchy, Carl Jenkinson, Per Mertesacker, Kieran Gibbs, Sead Kolasinac, Francis Coquelin, Jeff Reine-Adelaide, Mesut Ozil, Theo Walcott, Lucas, Danny Welbeck and Chuba Akpom were all back for pre-season training.

Matt Macey and Jon Toral, neither of whom are classed as first team players yet but are both classed as "senior players" under Premier League rules, were also in training. They were joined by youngsters Cohen Bramall, Marcus McGuane, Daniel Crowley, Reiss Nelson, Joe Willock, Donyell Malen and Eddie Nketiah.

Wojciech Szczesny, David Ospina, Laurent Koscielny, Nacho Monreal, Granit Xhaka, Mohamed Elneny, Aaron Ramsey, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Alex Iwobi and Olivier Giroud are all due back next week, as is young Nigerian Kelechi Nwakali, who will be training with the first team.

Hector Bellerin, Shkodran Mustafi, Calum Chambers, Rob Holding, Krystian Bielik, Alexis and Joel Campbell will all miss a considerable chunk of pre-season due to international commitments. Gabriel, Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere are all still injured, as are youngsters Gedion Zelalem and Stephy Mavididi.

Arsenal Youth.

Ryan Huddart, Tafari Moore, Jordi Osei-Tutu and Ismael Bennacer all joined in training today, along with the youngsters who trained yesterday.

Re: Pre-season underway
MattySadler 06 July, 2017 18:18
Reine-Adelaide was doing ball work today for the first time since his return from injury.

Kelechi Nwakali was also in training today. Apparently he held talks with the gaffer about his short term future. As far as I'm aware, he hasn't received a work permit yet so could go out on loan again. He was one of our top loan performers last season and looks a great prospect.

Re: Pre-season underway

The 25 man squad for our pre-season tour of Australia has been confirmed.

1. Petr Cech.
2. David Ospina.
3. Emi Martinez.
4. Laurent Koscielny.
5. Per Mertesacker.
6. Krystian Bielik
7. Sead Kolasinac.
8. Nacho Monreal.
9. Cohen Bramall.
10. Granit Xhaka.
11. Aaron Ramsey.
12. Francis Coquelin.
13. Mohamed Elneny.
14. Ainsley Maitland-Niles.
15. Alex Oxlade-Chamberain.
16. Theo Walcott.
17. Alex Iwobi.
18. Reiss Nelson.
19. Joe Willock.
20. Mesut Ozil.
21. Alexandre Lacazette.
22. Olivier Giroud.
23. Danny Welbeck.
24. Eddie Nketiah.
25. Donyell Malen.

Gabriel, Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla are all still injured, while Jeff Reine-Adelaide was deemed unfit.

Hector Bellerin, Shkodran Mustafi, Rob Holding, Calum Chambers, Alexis and Joel Campbell are all still on holiday (though there is no indication Campbell would've been selected anyway).

Wojciech Szczesny, Mathieu Debuchy, Carl Jenkinson, Kieran Gibbs, Lucas and Chuba Akpom all miss out, which hints that they could be the ones to depart.

Re: Pre-season underway
MattySadler 11 July, 2017 17:36
Confirmed Lacazette will be wearing the #9 shirt. Lucas has been given Campbell's #28 shirt, and Campbell has been left numberless.

Re: Pre-season underway
tigerline 11 July, 2017 21:19
Marty, do you know which formation will we be using?

Re: Pre-season underway
MattySadler 11 July, 2017 22:12
Given the absence of any natural right backs in the pre-season tour squad, I'd suggest we'll be using the 3-4-2-1, to begin with at least.

Re: Pre-season underway
MattySadler 13 July, 2017 12:46
Lacazette has just put us 2-0 up against Sydney. Tidy finish after Iwobi's cutback.

A few of the younger players have impressed.

Re: Pre-season underway
djarse 13 July, 2017 13:01
Yep Nelson, Joe Willock & Nketiah looked good and Martinez was good in the 2nd half. Should have won 10-2 really ........

Re: Pre-season underway

Not a game to judge, but he arrived late in the nick of time into space to put it home rather than a regular pick out.
Its a minor thing, but to me it looks like he wil get chances to score in this team. We have to see how many per game and how many he can convert

Matty, do you have access to the lineup and position subs?
Do you have an idea of who lined up where?

Re: Pre-season underway
MattySadler 13 July, 2017 14:30
Will sort when home

Re: Pre-season underway
MattySadler 13 July, 2017 16:56
We started:

-----------------Cech
------Bielik--Mertesacker--Kolasinac
Nelson---Coquelin---Willock---Bramall
---------Ozil----------Walcott
----------------Welbeck

And finished:

----------------Martinez
----Maitland-Niles--Elneny--Monreal
Nketiah---Oxlade-Chamberlain---Xhaka---Malen
----------------Iwobi
------Lacazette----------Giroud

Obviously the finishing back three was far from ideal but apparently we were hardly tested defensively and are missing a number of defenders.

Re: Pre-season underway
djarse 13 July, 2017 17:01
The team started like this:

Cech

Bielik Mertesacker Kolasinac

Nelson Coquelin Willock Bramall

Ozil Walcott

Wellbeck

Martinez replaced Cech at half time and at 67 minutes all the rest of the team changed to something like this (Matty may correct the formation):

Martinez

Maitland-Niles Elneny Monreal

Iwobi Xhaka Nketiah Oxlade-Chamberlain

Lacazette Malen

Giroud

Nketiah and Malen were wingbacks. During the 20 or so minutes I saw, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Iwobi seemed to have a bit more of a free role, but both seemed to pop up on the right more than anywhere else.

Yeah but literally nothing will be done about it regardless of whether we identify weaknesses early or not.

Re: Pre-season underway
CazOnARola 19 July, 2017 18:55
Its ok the entire team is a notch below. Only 2-3 players have the close control and vision that players from teams like bayern have.
Same goes for most teams in epl. But yes we do look horrible and top 4 is best we can do

Re: Pre-season underway
hahanice 19 July, 2017 20:18
not much chatter about the last 2 preseason games so ill give my insights.

the game against western sydney seemed pretty easy. really liked OG and lacazette linking up together. lacazette is so smooth the way he turns and finds shooting angles. really impressed by him. he is the type of player that can find a goal from nothing.

Welbeck looked good too, though he is a bit clumsy.

Liked almost all of the youngsters. Beliek was good. Willock was great in all of the games he played in. Neilson looked good in game 1, though he fell off a bit. Same with Bramal. really liked Malen as well. Niles looks solid. i don't think hes a game changer but he is a solid no nonsense type of player. i really liked watching all of our youngsters have the confidence to take players on and drive forward.

not sure i really like nkeitah, though he was being played way out of position, and hit the post twice.

Cech was fantastic against Bayern especially, and Martinez was brilliant in the shootout. pretty upset that woj is gone, especially after his instagram post saying he will miss arsenal, and its his boyhood club. but we are well stocked in goal.

the sr players are what we think they are. ozil looked good at times, frustrating at others. Kolasinac is better in the back 3 as opposed to as a wing back.

The ox and ramsey both looked fantastic. ramsey looks much fitter than he did last year. hopefully he can get back to some good form. he looks faster and sharper. the one who looks like he is the odd man out is Theo. not sure where he will find game time. hes always been useful, but is also one of our more frustrating players. didnt really do much in the first 3 games, especially not in comparison to the youngsters who all looked better than him.

oh, and elneny absolutely covered himself in glory for me. asked to play as a center back because the team needed to, he stepped in with no fuss and did a terrific job. well done to him.

i like the formation, we look sturdier. we were definitely outclassed by bayern today, but somehow got a win. the referee's were miserably bad but didnt change the scoreline much (pen shouldnt have been a pen, and offsides goal should have stood).

kind of a jumbled mess, sorry

Re: Pre-season underway
MattySadler 20 July, 2017 07:54
Nah appreciate it. I'm not in the country atm so not been able to comment on the games.

Watched the Bayern game in a bar, first half was horrifying at times, bar Cech, but it finished well. Iwobi's goal was brilliant from him, started the move and finished it. If he adds goals and consistency to his game he'll far surpass the ability of Walcott and Oxlade-Chamberlain. He has far more footballing intelligence.

Re: Pre-season underway
CazOnARola 20 July, 2017 13:14
He has already surpassed those 2 considering where he is played. He is ozils long term replacement in wengers head. He's much more like ozil than cesc. Still pretty young.
Lacazette will do well if iwobi, ramsey and ozil start but not gonna happen unless sanchez leaves

Jack Wilshere was back in training after his latest injury setback, while Hector Bellerin, Calum Chambers and Rob Holding were all back in training after the U21 European Championships. Lucas was also in training.

Youth players Reiss Nelson and Joe Willock remained with the first team after impressing so far and look set to feature in the Emirates Cup, as will Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who's first team promotion has been all but confirmed.

Chuba Akpom, Mathieu Debuchy, Kieran Gibbs and Carl Jenkinson, all out of favour, are like to feature for an Arsenal XI against Boreham Wood tomorrow night, as is Jeff Reine-Adelaide, who is on his way back from injury.

Alexis and Shkodran Mustafi are set to return next week, while Joel Campbell, Santi Cazorla and Gabriel are all still injured.

We are now much closer to the start of the season than when you began this thread; at this point, how would you project the composition of our senior squad?
Anticipated departures?
Anticipated additions? Mahrez? Carvalho?
Anticipated youth making the first team?
Anticipated loanees?

Tough to say on departures. By the sounds of things there has been interest in Gibbs (West Brom, Watford, Newcastle), Wilshere (Sampdoria, Antalyaspor, West Ham), Jenkinson (Brighton, Swansea) and Lucas (Deportivo), but Wenger said recently that whilst talks are ongoing, nothing is close. Apparently Nice were in for Debuchy but were put off by his wage demands. Not heard anything about Akpom yet but I'd expect him to go to a Championship side.

Who else we sign is anybody's guess. We just keep hearing the same contradictory rumours over and over again, which probably means little is happening. Regardless, I don't expect we'll strengthen the positions I feel need strengthening. I wouldn't be at all surprised if that is it for incomings.

Maitland-Niles is set to be promoted to the first team squad, while Bielik remains on the fringes. I expect Nelson will make the breakthrough sooner rather than later. Otherwise it is tough to say. There are a few players in the youth set up I quite like but breaking through won't be easy.

Bielik is a candidate to go out on loan, he needs regular games. Ditto Reine-Adelaide.

Re: Pre-season underway
MattySadler 27 July, 2017 16:38
Article from Jeorge Bird about the rise of Joe Willock, who has impressed so far in pre-season.

We released Matty Willock, the oldest of the three brothers, at 15, and he later signed for Man United. He was an unused substitute for them twice in the league last season. This summer we lost middle brother Chris to Benfica, and he has apparently done very well so far. Joe looks a very good prospect at just 17, so we'll be hoping things work out better for him here.

Wenger confirms Shkodran Mustafi and Alexis will be back in training on Sunday.

Team to face Boreham Wood:

-------------------Macey
----------Debuchy--Bielik--Pleguezuelo
Jenkinson--Reine-Adelaide--Toral--Bramall
----------Nketiah--Akpom--Mavididi

(formation is a guess, could be 4-2-3-1)

Subs: Keto, Bennacer, Mourgos, Malen, Johnson, McGuane.

Squad for this weekend's Emirates Cup has been confirmed:

Petr Cech, David Ospina, Emi Martinez, Hector Bellerin, Laurent Koscielny, Per Mertesacker, Rob Holding, Calum Chambers, Nacho Monreal, Sead Kolasinac, Cohen Bramall, Aaron Ramsey, Granit Xhaka, Franis Coquelin, Mohamed Elneny, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Joe Willock, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Theo Walcott, Reiss Nelson, Mesut Ozil, Alex Iwobi, Alexandre Lacazette, Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck.

Arsenal.com

Looking a bit more healthy defensively with Bellerin, Holding and Chambers back. You replace Bramall, Willock and Nelson with Mustafi, Gabriel, Cazorla and Alexis, and that is basically going to be our first team squad for this season, barring any signings/ departures. Horrifying...

Kieran Gibbs, Jack Wilshere and Lucas trained seperately today.

Re: Pre-season underway
MattySadler 03 August, 2017 07:06
Gibbs, Wilshere and Lucas were back training with the first team on Tuesday, along with youth team players Charlie Gilmour, Joe Willock, Reiss Nelson and Nathan Tormey. Nelson and Willock, as well as goalkeeper Ryan Huddart, trained with the first team yesterday.

Re: Pre-season underway
MattySadler 03 August, 2017 12:36
My favourite Arsenal-related Twitter person, @JeorgeBird, appears to be at Arsenal training!

He says that in terms of youth team players and "players surplus to requirements", Ryan Huddart, Matt Macey, Mathieu Debuchy, Cohen Bramall, Jack Wilshere, Joe Willock, Jeff Reine-Adelaide, Reiss Nelson and Lucas are all training with the first team. Apparently Wilshere is looking a tad rusty, understandably, but Lucas looks very sharp.

Gabriel is back in training, but is training with Chambers and Jenkinson, away from the rest of the group.
