Wolves 2019-20 Prediction League

Ready to go

By Wolves
July 21 2019

OK folks the 2019-20 Prediction League is ready to roll

Following comments received on the previous thread we have decided it is right to include all Wolves games this season, including Europa League and domestic Cup games. So far the only non-league games included are the initial games against Crusaders, but other matches will be added as they are announced. The help of board members in pointing out omissions and errors is always appreciated as it is quite a big piece of work to try and keep up with.

Good luck to all members taking part

Another year, good news, thanks Chesh.

Will anybody back anything other than a Wolves win in our 1st competitive match?!

Well we did well against the top teams, in both cup and league, last season, and stumbled against more lowly outfits (like Shrewsbury, almost). But the more likely question would seem to be how many goals.
Hope everyone has shaken off the Far East trip.

I have decided to compete in the prediction league- obviously my participation means others will be playing for second so enjoy the battle for the champions league place ( 2nd)

I welcome you back to the competition Angry, and must remind you that previous champions, myself included will not be relinquishing our positions easily.

Nice one Angry. Your challenge will I'm sure add more spice to our competition.

It would of course add even more interest if you were to offer a forfeit should you - heaven forbid - fail to knock us all into oblivion!!!

With a forfeit should come a reward Cheshire, so what's the prize for winning ?

Already regretting the decision to include the Europa League ‘friendlies’ for which I voted. Looks like it might be yet another ugly campaign for some of us on the prediction league.

Evening All
Afraid I have been away a lot lately so have just caught up with inputting the results of our last five games, and there has been a change at the top. No - not the threatened runaway by An Angry Wolf who is even languishing below me!! No, Bull Shat Moxi and Lupinehowler have taken over in joint top place from Meditate Today, who is now also level with Andy Fincher and Ivybridge Wolf, who appears to have suddenly got his act together!!
You are now able to put in predictions of this week's game against Braga and next week's Carabao Cup tie with Reading.

Angry I cannot make my prediction either because the game is still scheduled to kick off at 15:00 hrs yesterday!! That is because I have failed to make the necessary changes following our Europa League match involvement. I make every effort to keep the league up to date with all the changes that are made - I have already changed the latest Sky matches, but I’m afraid I missed this one, and you are the first to raise an issue with it. I can probably still change it so everyone can make their predictions before kick off but have to try and be fair to everyone. I can only apologise!

I have decided it is only fair to leave things as they are and the game will be scored as 0 - 0 to be fair to those who have been unable to make a forecast. Once again I apologise as I did not realise I had not changed the kick off time and date. I do try to keep up with all changes, but please alert me if you see any that I have missed.

an angry wolf
22/09/2019 15:59
TY Cheshire , that seems a fair compromise.. typical as I predicted a draw and would have gone for
1-1 and having just got back it seems I was correct

The Prediction League is now up to date with all changes up to and including the home tie with Villa adjusted. Europa League matches are included. Please note the unusual starting time of our away Europa League ties
I will apologise again for the situation at the weekend, and to the many of you who it seems forecast a 1 - 1 draw!! The match has been scored as a 0 - 0 for fairness and this has made the league slightly more competitive. Please remember to forecast for tomorrow night's home game with Reading too

an angry wolf
04/10/2019 14:47
How is the league updated , does it do it automatically or is there a great deal of work involved? I ask due to it often being weeks without being updated.. obviously if it has to be done with some work no one expects it to be done religiously but like most tables Id expect it to be updated after each game as no one has an upto date table with it being weeks old.

Cheshire wolf
06/10/2019 10:31
It's entirely down to me Angry together with many other duties to keep the board running. I try to keep up with it and at least update if after two games but sometimes forget. I will try to do so after each game in future, so that - as you say - the table reflects each game.

barmy army wolf

Andy , many teams have reserve sides in Europe so maybe this is your reserve outfit. The bad news in the Molineux way league is the results of both teams are taken into account ( points added together and divided by 2 to form your league position) Sorry to be the bearer of bad news (Sm13)

The Prediction League has been updated following yesterday's game and guess who's top all of a sudden???? No.... not Angry- he's over halfway down the table!! No - your two Moderators are remakably joint top!! No fishy business going on as that's not possible either. I'll have to continue remembering to make my forecasts at this rate!

I'd suggest 3 getting relegated to keep the league alive instead of mid table obscurity... as a 3 time prediction league winner and premier league prediction champion it's fair to say the battle is on for second now my season is starting to get going but who will get the honour of finishing "best of the rest "? Investing in the academy rarely pays dividends - the young and hungry approach by your board at Andy Fincher lane diversifying is a disaster waiting to happen. Here at Angry Arms park we focus on the first team and have the under 18s booted out to old fashioned borstals.

I fully intend to Andy dont worry about that. Surely Andys other team can be deleted and we can allow him to continue on adding the 3 points on at the end. It seems to stem from when you had issues logging in Andy so maybe you made your predictions with another ip- hopefully the FA ( Ivy/Cheshire) will look into it as 2nd is still up for grabs.

Hi Andy, sorry to see your bowing out . In Angry’s analogy, being more of a ‘David Davies’ , I’m not at all sure what to do to resolve this problem (wished I could), our Bert Millichip / Greg Dyke is more your Chesh and if he can’t help, it might be more down to Sepp Blatter aka the football network.net !!

Angry I sent another email on Friday to chase up support for your problem. I will also ask if it's possible for them to change you name on the Prediction League from An Angry Wolf to Wolf123, then presumably you could change your own name accordingly at the right time.
Out of interest I also forecast a Wolves win y'day so have fallen further behind Ivybridge Wolf!!

wolf123
12/01/2020 12:58
Cheshire what good will changing the name do? I cant log into the account that is currently 5th in the league so any predictions on this account will start from 0 points. Even if the account on there changes to the same name as this one, the email address is still the same that I cant access so it wont make any difference. In any event Im not competing as wolf 123, itd be like wolves playing away from Molineux- if I cant keep my name it all seems a bit daft. I shall graciously bow out thumbs down

wolf123
16/01/2020 17:14
The prediction league sadly is unfit for purpose. In addition to Andy not being able to make predictions, myself, now Essington is having issues and it's now become a contest of who has the least technical difficulties in determining who wins the league contrary to any expertise in forecasting football matches. I've now missed around 10 games due to my own account problems and even issues before this around September time so regardless of getting my old account back in the near future, can't expect to win it with potentially 30 lost points up for grabs. I'd suggest instead of this farce next season, posters put their predictions out on a thread and the table is worked out manually.. we dont need goal difference especially when you consider its impossible to have a positive GD with the leader on -28. It's not true to life and just bizarre. My "games played" keeps racking up despite not having logged into my account or made any predictions for weeks. If next season we have a league which is simply based on points scrapping goal diff with any teams tied on points ( unlikely) at the end of the season having some kind of sudden death prediction like we had in the premier league prediction competition 2 years ago - CL final or whatever itd be much easier. I don't see anyone entering this current format next season when you can get banned/barred from entering predictions at any stage.. as it stands if Essington drops out the only realistic winners are the two mods and Sheffield with even Cheshire apparently having issues making predictions earlier this season.

Hi all, I know that Chesh is looking into this as well as a couple of other board related matters, however he isn’t able to personally post this evening.

It is very disappointing to hear about the problems some are having with the Prediction League, something we’d all like to work well for obvious reasons. I will be frank, I haven’t experienced any myself, however that I know Chesh will do his best to resolve. Angry, I note your comments about future competitions and they are something worthy of consideration. In the meantime, as Essington has asked, are there any others having trouble with the Prediction League?

On an unrelated matter I had a devil of a time trying to write and upload my match thread ahead of the cup replay - the whole site resorted to pages of technical gibberish before I could finally get my own considered brand of gibberish published! I wonder if there are wider technical problems at play - probably unrelated, I appreciate.

Not your fault or Cheshires fault Ivy , seems to be sportsnetwork related issues sadly. Without both of you the site would have died but we cant have competitions where it's a lottery if you can complete them over a 9 month period. I think itd be very simple to update a manual league table if we keep it simple , games played and points leaving out the GD … even now im not sure how its worked out in the current league. An added advantage of us posting predictions manually on a thread is we could see who thinks what which adds some interest instead of anonymously

I agree entirely with these comments regarding Ivy's and Cheshire's efforts in keeping the site going. We may be a small band of posters on here but we are the elite.
While I don't wish to influence anyone, not that anyone would be influenced by me anyway, but I can say that I would be in favour of a manual prediction league that Angry has suggested, although don't think you can all copy my predictions just because I am the best.

Thanks for updating everyone Ivy, and I can only share the frustration of Essington, Andy and Angry at the apparent failure of the Prediction League. I have myself been increasingly frustrated at the lack of responses from Sportnetwork to my emails in trying to get Angry's situation sorted out. I emailed again yesterday, and had a response to say the chap who deals with the dynamics of the system is off today but will hopefully look at it over the weekend. I have responded and expressed the frustration of our members at these developments and suggested they read them for themselves. I will feed back any further developments.
With regards to Angry's suggestion for changing the Prediction League process I would be happy to be involved with it. I believe Ivybridge Wolf and I would be happy to see any development which helps maintain an interest in the board, and - who knows - may encourage other participants in it to post more frequently too. At this stage i wouldn't be raising my hand to administer it as I already have enough to do, but would happily support such a venture.

Angry I was in the pub on Wednesday with my son (who happens to be a Manc!) and some friends and I totally forgot to make my prediction, so I reckon my chances of winning it this year are now probably as good as yours!!!

Thankyou chesh and ivy for all your efforts in keeping this board alive, I don't get the chance to post on here as much these days because of work commitments but I still try and read the posts especially angrys ha ha. I have been a member on here for a few years now but not as long as some of you old timers like chesh, ivy and angry. The thing I like about this board is it might not have many members but it has a tight knit family feel to it where most posters actually talk sense not like some other wolves board mentioning no names and long may it continue. Anyway just to let you know chesh I was able to get my prediction on for the saints game today which was a surprise after a few games not being able to. So I will continue with the league for now and see how it goes, I may keep my title after all ha ha. Thanks for your efforts guys keep up the good work, UTW.

So... after the lengthy and frustrating hiatus our season will restart in earnest on Sat 20th June. The dates of the confirmed fixtures have been adjusted accordingly. In order to keep the games in their originally planned order, the dates of the remaining fixtures have been changed to 2021, and will be changed when the new dates are confirmed. Good luck (again!!) everyone.

Great work! Since it is so close at the top of the Prediction League I think we need to clarify whether Europa League fixtures (possibly in August) count or whether the prediction league ends with Chelsea away. The original decision was 'we have decided to include all Wolves games this season including Europa League' but we might want to revisit that. I am happy with a decision either way but would want to avoid a dispute among board members needing to go to the court of arbitration for sport, given the seriousness of the Prediction League.

Good point Sheffield, might be an idea to get it going first then see what happens. We’ve just got the 3 fixtures set at the moment, of course that will change, but ultimately if there’s a big gap from the end of the league to the conclusion of the Europa, it might leave us dangling a bit. The other thing is we’re all thinking the league will progress without a hitch. On all counts, time will tell!

I also agree that it is a valid point Sheffield, but to be honest my view is that we should see things through to the end if we possibly can. As you said the decision was originally made to include Europa League games so personally I think we should maintain that concept, unless there is a major issue to prevent us doing so.
As Ivy says we only know what should be happening for the next three matches, but hopefully things will become much clearer soon.

Chesh ..... just to confirm before the weekend, I assume we are including all the Europa matches in the prediction league?

Hi Ivy Yes that is my view that we should continue to include the Europa League games. Otherwise how is An Angry Wolf going to complete is promised win??(Sm100)

Bearing in mind I missed around a fifth of the season unable to log into my account ( despite the 0-0 default forecast counting as games played) I am more than happy with a top 4 finish

So we are into the Europa matches now ...... I genuinely take no pleasure that I predicted the score correctly v Chelsea

Not that I have any vested interest! 😎?🏆?

well done Ivy...... no sours grapes but this years prediction league has been a pain in the a*ss from start to finish with covid, inability to log in and my club has been liquidated with the supporters saying they have taken up watching the grass grow instead of renewing season tickets .

As for Bury, I see that they have been denied access to the non league pyramid, with another non chairman like chairman’s statement HERE. Very sad.

It's hard to believe any professional club would allow such a poorly worded statement full of grammatical errors such as not distinguishing between "their" and "there" on a website. It illustrates no one cares about the club in any position of authority as you would be embarrassed reading that statement at a scout group notification rather than a club which has been existence 150 years.

How someone like that has been allowed to take over the club with the supposed fit and proper test criteria implemented by the EFL I've no idea... infact it's a minor miracle the owner is living independently without carers on standby.

Regarding the prediction league, I haven't enjoyed this season at all- it's been more like an ordeal than a pastime and much of it boils down to disliking predicting against wolves in games. There have been games where we are losing and having predicted a defeat find myself thinking at least my pred score will come in which I don't think is particularly healthy. I also think far too much emphasis is put on the correct score which becomes more luck based than skill based with one correct score equalling three correct home/draw/away predictions which is hard enough.... quite frankly it's a pain in the a*rse and much preferred the premier league prediction competition instead of backing my own team to lose which is always unsavoury.

Hi Chaps
Sincere apologies for my failure to post the result of our final Europa League game which I have now done. I have been in Crete since 14th August, and for some reason the Molineux Way slipped my mind!
Many congratulations to Ivybridge Wolf for another winning season.
There have been some discussions during the season on whether we should devise and manage our own League to take into account the criticisms of this competition. I am always open to change and would of course be happy if someone wants to take responsibility for managing a new process. If not I will also seek reassurance that there are enough interested parties in another PL next season before putting in the work.
Congrats again Ivy

No quarantine from Crete?

Thanks Angry. I must admit I was pleased to finish 4th, as there have been several games this season where preparations for covering the match have perhaps contributed to me forgetting to make my forecast.

Indeed no quarantine on returning from Crete as we did last pm. We each had to complete a Passenger Locator Form which was more a more protracted process than the one for entry to Greece, but then found it wasn't needed at Border Control at all, leaving Greece or entering the UK, so there would have been no way of the authorities knowing for sure whether one had been completed or not!! Still as there is no charge I imagine most people will do so!!

Incidentally the Greeks are treating the threat very seriously. People working in shops and bars/restaurants etc must wear masks, and shoppers must wear masks whilst in the shops. Failure to do so incurs a fine of 150 Euros . All restaurants bars clubs etc must be cleared by midnight and failure to renders the owners liable to a fine of 10,000 Euros! So the clubs in Malia were opening 2 hours earlier, then all the British kids were going to the supermarkets for alcohol and finishing the night on the beaches!!!

I just wanted to ask whether there is the same interest in the Prediction League for next season? There has been talk about creating a more interesting challenge within the site, but it would need someone to create and administer it.
I am happy to do all the preparation for the Prediction League and continue managing it - whilst trying not to make any more mistakes - providing there are enough members wanting to challenge Ivybridge Wolf for his title.
Please let me know as I only have just over a week to do the work

Well as defending champion 🤓 I’d be more than happy if the prediction league kept going, though it has to depend on others who visit this site to reach that critical mass of competitors required to enter, keep entering and make it worthwhile for your effort, Chesh. I appreciate however, it would be an uphill struggle for anyone to grasp the title away from me ⚽️😳😂

Certainly, I would be equally happy should another contributor want to devise a competition with a different approach, though at this stage, I would not wish to commit myself.

What do others reckon?

I would also be willing to take part in the prediction league, either as it stands or under a new format. If it was to be a something new, I would hope that the rules are kept simple but I wouldn't want anything to do with running it, which isn't very helpful so apologies for that.

I am happy to take part as it is. I assume the software is provided by the site so although not perfect especially the goals for and against columns it would not be easy to improve without coding skills. I would suggest not including the cups if it reduces in-season updating needed by the organiser.

I would also be equally happy if it was improved or changed (I think Angry mentioned a previous competition predicting not just Wolves matches but that was before my time). I can’t help with the administration unfortunately so maybe keep the status quo.

I won't be competing for reasons mentioned earlier in the thread but good luck to those that do. I also think that maybe it's time the other participants in the league contribute more to the boards with the obvious exceptions.. Ivy won the league and apart from me I think 3 other people mentioned it and other threads are like ghost town exercises.
