Ivan scores at Molineux

By Wolves
April 13 2019

After Wolves FA Cup bubble burst at Wembley they now travel to Southampton seeking to re-establish themselves in 7th spot in the Premiership.

After today's game Wolves will be heading back to Marbella in Spain for some more 'warm weather training', to prepare them for the Premier League run-in. Today they will strive for another three points in their ambition to achieve European football next season. However they will face a Southampton team who have visibly responded to the appointment of Ralph Hasenhuttl, and are currently fighting to stay above the bottom three so are likely to be a different challenge from the team managed by Mark Hughes when they visited Molineux in September.

Southampton have scored in each of their last eleven home games, whilst Wolves have failed to keep a clean sheet in an away game since October, so perhaps we can anticipate goals in this game. Wolves currently sit in 8th place in the PL on equal points with Leicester in 7th but having played two games less. Everton and Watford are in close attandance in 9th in 10th, both currently one point behind. So both teams have everything to play for in what should be an interesting game.

This board will hopefully keep members up to date with the progress of the match for those unable to follow it.

Nuno reverts to his regular team for this afternoon's game, although Saiss retains his place over Bennett. Line-up:

Patricio, Saiss, Coady, Boly, Doherty, Dendoncker, Neves, Moutinho, Jonny, Jimenez, Jota

Subs: Ruddy, Vinagre, Bennett, Gibbs-White, Cavaleiro, Costa, Traore

Southampton seem to be getting their act together so it will not be an easy afternoon. Hoping that the team have been able to put last week behind them because they will need to be on the front foot to get control of the game.

Afternoon Lupine I agree entirely with you. I think it will be a difficult game for us as they are well motivated considering there situation. They undoubtedly have some dangerous players
As I type Southampton open the scoring through Redmond before I can even find a stream!!

Not the start we wanted Saints score within 3 minutes. Poor defending.

Good attempt by Neves gets us a corner

Cheshire wolf
13/04/2019 15:10
Joao puts a free kick in which Leander heads just wide

Lupy

Starting to string some passes together and don’t seem to be too rattled by going a goal down. Plenty of time to rescue this.

Cheshire wolf

Willy Boly gives the ball away which leads to a shot by Redmond but easy for Rui to collect

Referee this afternoon is Jon Moss

Good break by Jota but tackled just as he tries to get it to Raul. Shot from corner taken by Gunn

All the play in the middle of the park.
No meaningful attacks from Wolves yet, looking a bit disjointed,
needing a spark from someone.

Saiss tries a left footed shot but well wide. Saints dropping back now in face of Wolves pressure

Cheshire wolf
13/04/2019 15:20
Great footwork from Raul before shot which is well collected

Lupy

Wolves starting to press and Saints sitting back which will invite us to push forward.

Cheshire wolf

Wolves getting their act together now, forcing Saints back whenever they are in possession, and the extra man in midfield is telling. Redmond takes the impact of a Neves shot on the end of his foot and is hurt.

Willy Boly!!!!!!
Fine header from a well earned corner
1 - 1

Lupy

Great header from Boly. 1-1

Redmond beats the offside and flicks a ball over Rui in a well taken goal. He wasn't tracked by any of our defenders!
Saints 2 Wolves 1

Cheshire wolf

Poor pass from Neves nearly gave them a third but went wide

Cheshire wolf
13/04/2019 15:32
Sims should have made it 3-1 but he put it wide after a fine pass from Ings

Lupy
13/04/2019 15:32
Our defenders need to wake up.

Cheshire wolf
13/04/2019 15:36
Good break forward by Doc but he just fails to connect with Raul. Then again a corner earned by Doc, which with a shot from Neves which is wide - his 61st shot from outside the box this season!!

Cheshire wolf

Joao resorts to a foul to stop Redmond and gets the first yellow card of the game. Redmond is such a fast mover with the ball he is always a risk. Free kick finds Yoshida in the are but it goes wide. 5 mins plus added time to play

Cheshire wolf
13/04/2019 15:45
Two mins added time at the end of first half

Cheshire wolf
13/04/2019 15:50
Raul gets a yellow card for a foul don Hojbjerg although he didn't actually touch him!
First half whistle goes. Southampton lead due to taking the opportunities they have had, although they have also missed a couple! Boly got a fine header back from a corner, but Redmond found too much space in our area for an easy second goal. Ings is dropping back into midfield to help c relate opportune the Saints. Wolves are playing well, although Jota and Raul have struggled to link up the way we know they can.

Lupy
13/04/2019 15:53
A fairly even first half but our defenders need to up their communication. Midfield is crowded and neither Neves or Moutinho able to have any real time to play their usual passing game so forwards being starved of supply.
Vinagre might just liven things up a bit.

Cheshire wolf
13/04/2019 16:05
He we go again with no changes o personnel
Good start from Jota for a free kick but come to nothing

Cheshire wolf
13/04/2019 16:06
Jota fed by Otto in the box, should have passed to Raul but eventually put it over the bar

Cheshire wolf
13/04/2019 16:07
Wolves really on the front foot so far

Cheshire wolf
13/04/2019 16:10
Good play from Leander in right corner leads to a corner on the other side. Wolves pinning the Saints in their own half

Cheshire wolf
13/04/2019 16:14
Traore being prepared

Lupy
13/04/2019 16:16
It’s circus time. Adama coming on.

Cheshire wolf
13/04/2019 16:18
Jonny earns another corner. Shots from Doc & Jonny from the corner fail.
Traore replaces Doc

Cheshire wolf
13/04/2019 16:19
Shane Long replaces Ings & Romeo replaces Sims for Saints

Lupy
13/04/2019 16:20
Adama replaces the Doc.

Cheshire wolf
13/04/2019 16:23
First break by Traore & cross just fails to reach Raul. Leander runs the ball out before he can cross.

Billericay Wolf
13/04/2019 16:26
Come on Traore. Show us why we paid £18m for you. Is the Doc not clicking today?

Cheshire wolf
13/04/2019 16:28
Yellow card for Bertrand for clattering Neves in the face.
Great play by Traore for a corner kick. Saints have 9 players in defence now so we have to hope Traore can get behind them. Great opportunity for Raul but he puts it out for a throw in!
MGW replaces Neves who in my opinion is struggling to maintain his high standards these days

Cheshire wolf
13/04/2019 16:29
Chaos in the Wolves box following a corner. Traore fails to clear the lines and Shane Long scores an easy goal
Saints 3 Wolves 1

Lupy
13/04/2019 16:31
Adama was asleep, plays Long onside.

3-1.. season over. Im not really interested whether we finish 10th or 15th as they are all the same thing really. Our main hope was to get into Europe which isnt happening now.. time to get away from football until next season. Have a decent summer and see you next season gentlemen.

Cheshire wolf
13/04/2019 16:32
Rui saves from the feet of Yoshida. Our defending is becoming chaotic

Cheshire wolf
13/04/2019 16:37
Traore may be a good option on the wing but he isn't a defender so shouldn't be seen as an automatic replacement for Doc

Cheshire wolf
13/04/2019 16:40
Jonny has played well today

Lupy
13/04/2019 16:42
Poorest defensive performance I’ve seen this season.

Cheshire wolf
13/04/2019 16:43
Saint said are defending in numbers but have enough speed in players like Long & Redmond to be able to strike on the counter. We are struggling to have an impact on their defence.

Cheshire wolf
13/04/2019 16:46
We have no urgency in mounting an attack - constantly trying to build from the back and attack a nine man defence. Costa replaces Jota

Cheshire wolf
13/04/2019 16:49
Looks like Southampton will be safe this season, achieving their first win over us since the 6-0 win against McCarthy's team - remember that!!
Three minutes added time to play

Cheshire wolf
13/04/2019 16:56
Rui has been the busier of the two keepers by far. Wolves have been busy but largely toothless list Saints have defended well.
All over and we lose 3 - 1 at Southampton after a poor performance really. We looked to be the better team in the first half despite a poor start, and Boly scored a very good header, but defensive lapses left Redmond and Long the chance to score easy goals.
It will be interesting to see what effect a week in the sun has on our tired looking team

Lupy
13/04/2019 16:58
Well that was the most pedestrian performance I’ve seen all season. Not one player stands out for any particular credit and we got what we deserved.
I do find it frustrating to watch the team play the same training ground moves over and over again where is the creativity or flair.
