Match Thread - Bristol City vs Wolves

Nuno's friend Lee Johnson

By Wolves
December 30 2017

Second in the Championship Bristol City take on League leaders Wolves in a match which, following Cradiff's recent abysmal run, will surely give both teams an opportunity to establish themselves at the top. It seems Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santa and City Manager Lee Johnson know each other well as they completed their coaching badges together.

This eagerly anticipated match features on Sky TV today with a 5:30 kick-off. Updates rather than a match commentary will be available on the Molineux Way at regular intervals.

Two changes for this afternoon's match. Danny Batth comes in to replace Ryan Benett and Leo Bonatini is in for Ivan Cavaleiro.

Line-up: Ruddy, Batth, Coady, Boly, Doherty, Saiss, Neves, Douglas, Helder Costa, Bonatini, Jota

Subs: Norris, Bennett, Hause, N'Daiye, Enobakhare, Cavaleiro, Gibbs-White

Derby County are now in second place on 48 points following their 2 - 1 win at Ipswich. It will interesting to see if this motivates Bristol City. Meanwhile earlier challengers Sheffield Utd have lost at home to Bolton and slide to 6th place on equal points with Villa.

30 minutes gone and 0 - 0. Wolves coping quite well being a player down, but Costa struggling to collect & use the ball up front

Doesn't sound promising, however I am sure that Nuno will have prepared the team for playing with 10 men,

They're doing OK so far. City have a back line if big defenders, which Costa is up against alone, but our defence are doing well.

Half time and 0 - 0

John Ruddy made two good saves early on. Danny Batth then sent off for a lungeing challenge after he had list the ball. No surprise at when the ref produced the red card. Jota then won a free kick on the edge of their area, which - perhaps combined with the sending off - seemingly incensed Nuno and he was sent off again.
Ryan Bennett replaced Bonatini, and since then we have been solid at the back.
Douglas took a glorious free kick after the foul on Jota but it cannoned back off the post. That's the closest chance so far.

Well we've played with 10 before - these are professional players - should have a game plan! All is not yet lost - though I have to admit I'd settle for a point!

Only a matter of time before Bristol score or at best somehow defending like dogs for a 0-0. People don't understand the 10 men disadvantage in football as much as they should. It's a shame as Batths sending off has ruined it from a sporting perspective

I think Costa's still struggling to find his old form. He's replaced by Cavaleiro which is probably a good move

Obviously playing against 10 men should be a huge advantage but in many decades following football I've often seen teams unable to take that advantage to fruition. What has just happened should always be the case - but frequently isn't. I've seen Wolves struggle against 10 men enough times!

City down to ten men too. Goalkeeper Fielding upended Doc to prevent him scoring and sent off. Brilliant pass from a Cav to set up Doc.

I don't agree, I have traded on thousands of games and the pattern is a team with ten men is effectively game over unless fluke circumstances prevail or the team with ten starts as huge favourites. Bristol go down to ten and now we equalise..another amazing coincidence !

Ten points clear at the top going into 2018

I think the ref could have used common sense with the batth challenge but technically by the letter of the law it was a red as both feet were up showing studs. As Cheshire says, the pics of nuno in the directors box cheering the goal whilst the old stuffed shirts wagged fingers at him made my night as well.

I agree Ivy, it must have been fantastic for the fans who travelled.
Im sure there will be many ups and downs before the end of the season but i believe there are always moments which define a season and this was one such moment for wolves.
What a fantastic feeling when everyone is pulling together, Owner, Manager, backroom staff, players, fans etc..
Happy Days!

I wrote a match day review last night Irish but a bit concerned it’s been lost in the Sportnetwork ether as all my PMs are showing as blank. Written in the moment when I got home. I was absolutely buzzin! It’s always tough when down to 10 but there was a big difference yesterday against the odds, We retained a combative approach but remained calm - I never felt we were out of it even when we went 1 down.

Personally, I blew 3 gaskets. First when Fielding was sent off. By denying a certain goal, I didn’t just want to see a red card, I wanted to see death by firing squad. Funny how the moment grabs ya! Second - of course the Douglas free kick. Truly wild scenes! The third - what else but the nodding head of Bennett in the 94th. Complete pandemonium at Ashton Gate! I saw the honours list yesterday, usual rubbish but I would like to have nominated the whole of Douglas’s left leg for services to football. A gem of a left boot delivered to us from obscurity.

One of those matches and days we live for as fans! Utterly fantastic.

I have to agree Chicago, it is good see a really good night for Wolves bringing posters on to the board.

I must admit I am often fascinated when I start the match thread to see how views there are before the game starts, and then how few posters there can be during and after the game. I hope board members will stick around during 2018 as I think it's going to be a truly memorable year for us - knowing that if we achieve promotion we will have a damned good chance of staying up without relying on the financial demise of other clubs or other excuses.

As most of you will know I'm doing my best to keep the board running by myself. I don't have the technical nous of Badge32, but just do my best. I therefore really need to know that it's worth doing, and look forward to the time when someone can step up to help.

In the meantime Happy New Year to you all, and here's to another three points tomorrow night.

PS: I've just watched this highlights package of our season so far to some great music in the background - well worth a watch

The board views are inaccurate sadly Cheshire. I have started threads over the years in the early hours of the morning where no one is on the site and often it shows as having 7 views within 5 minutes of posting ...this is at 3 am when it says users on the site "1". It's fair to say you should take the viewing figures with a pinch of salt.

I take on board what you say and and have no doubt you are correct.

However there are still a number of posters - old members and new - taking part in the Prediction League every week who hardly ever post on here. The League is currently being led by someone called 'Meditate today' who has never posted under that name to my knowledge, whilst I may have suspicions of who in fact it is!

It's a disappointing state of affairs when the board is really and truly struggling to stay afloat.
