A Stale substitute for the beautiful game - An Angry Report

By Wolves
October 24 2017

An Angry Wolf recently travelled to Denmark and kindly offered to do a report on his footballing observations. Unfortunatley the photo provided proved to difficult to add

Having travelled to Denmark recently, I decided to compare and contrast different styles of club football in person by attending what is viewed as one of the bigger clubs in Denmark, but certainly not a club which sets the pulse racing in the form of Brondby.

As I have no interest in either player performances or the match result, I was looking more towards the collective style of team play rather than so called star players for each team and it's fair to say was disappointed by the so called "entertainment" on offer.

Regarding the stadium of Brondby itself, I would say the closest equivalent in England is probably Reading's Madejski stadium. From the outside it looks a fairly intimidating arena, but once inside lacks character and is simply a moderately sized bowl of blue seats. The main difference being netting coming down at the ends of the pitch behind the goal to presumably stop wayward shots entering the stands, which looked fairly tacky.

The match itself started well for the neutral spectator with Silkeborg taking an early lead meaning the favourite at home had all the work to do. The first half was played at a pedestrian pace rarely seen in England and a tempo so slow it wouldn't have looked more sluggish had the match been played underwater with players simply static seemingly unable to run more than a few metres. Solbakkens style of football at Wolves involved very little movement which seems to be a common trait of this league. The game's defining moment was a red card near the end of the first half for Silkeborg which as we know in any league is a huge game changer effectively ruining the match as a contest. In the second half the inevitable Brondby goals came, ending 4-1, so hard to judge or rate the effectiveness of one of the biggest clubs in Denmark playing a tiny team suffering a numerical disadvantage. The crowd was announced as less than 14,000 which is a fairly pathetic turn out given the supposed size of Brondby, with the atmosphere fairly poor bar one of their stands which was the equivalent of the southbank creating a fairly raucous atmosphere.

In conclusion, it's fair to say we are blessed in England with a much faster tempo of football with crowds bigger in League 1 than most top flight Danish clubs. Solbakken was out of his depth at Wolves and I can see why "foreign success" in poor leagues like this doesn't always translate to achieving much in countries with a much higher standard of football. I have attempted to add a couple of pictures and if they don't appear will add them later in the thread.

The funniest aspect of the game was the Silkeborg travelling support which entailed a travelling contingent of less than 50 fans which seems to be a common characteristic in many leagues with tiny turnouts for away fans. The chief cheerleader for the Silkeborg hardcore fanbase was a 12 year old child banging a drum sitting behind the goal screaming for his heroes who appeared from time to time.

Different countries, different cultures, different football styles. By the sound of it, I would prefer the Championship and Premiership. Thanks for the report.

Hi Angry, I worked in Denmark in the 80s and went to a few games.
The atmosphere and quality of football were both very poor.

However, what i cant get my head around is that the international teams from Scandinavia are doing so well at the moment even though the domestic teams and leagues are so poor??? Just an observation!

Maybe it is just down to effort and commitment?

On another note,,,, is the beer still as expensive as ever???

Everything is expensive there Irish as you probably know, but at least you can bring a beer to the seat at the stadium unlike here with health and safety etc. Thankfully I don't drink much anyway lol tho I prefer the danish stuff to beer over here.

Were those photos taken at the same time? Just looks deserted at the right hand end. I presume the away fans are closest to the camera?

Nice to see a write up. I might be inspired to do one of my own post Wolves match. Thinking of Reading away and Bolton at home at the mo.

By the way how much was that beer?

Both pics were taken at the same time, on the left was the busy stand , the right in the section closest to the cam was the away end. No idea how much the beer was , it was in kroner so handed 100 kroner in and got a load of strange coins back... one of the smaller denominations even had a hole in it.

Please do that Ivy, and anyone else with items which will interest board members as this one has. If it is sent to me as a PM I will post it as per Angry's. This will help alleviate all the responsibility on Badge for publishing items through Sportnetwork to keep our site open.
Thanks
