By Molineux Mick January 6 2010 Having safely negotiated the hurdle of the first round of the FA Cup last weekend, Wolves must concentrate on improving their Premiership situation before even thinking about the fourth round home tie against Crystal Palace.
Before that game, Mick McCarthy takes his team to London for a vital match against West Ham this weekend followed by another big game at home to Wigan the following weekend. The Palace game is scheduled for Saturday, January 23, and just three days later Liverpool are due at Molineux for a Premiership game. A month which could shape our season ends with another vital match at Hull. Gianfranco Zola’s West Ham are not having the best of seasons on or off the pitch, and Sunday’s match is one Wolves must target as one from which they should be getting some reward if they are to stay in the top flight. The Hammers are one point behind Wolves, but both have played more games than most of the teams around them and this really is a six-pointer – even a draw won’t be a lot of use to either team with the likes of Bolton and Hull desperate to use their games in hand to get out of the relegation zone. It might be tough at the top, but it’s tight near the bottom, too, as up to ten teams battle it out for safety. The Wigan game promises to be another six-pointer, so Mick and the lads will be desperate to get something out of the game at Upton Park, provided the weather allows the game to go ahead, of course. Fingers crossed, because the last thing we need at the moment is fixture congestion.
I remember the cup runs of the 70s and early 80s. 75/76 we got relegated. 78/79 we were almost relegated. 80/81 were almost relegated.
There is simply no question for the long term future of the club, there is no comparison in terms of the importance (financially) of staying in the PL against getting to the next round of the FA cup.
Great cup runs DO not necessarily mean good league runs or even survival. This season there is NOTHING that should get in the way of Wolves avoiding relegation.
And I think that becomes even stronger next season as should we survive next season is going to be extremely important in what is likely to be an even stronger PL.
Hmm..I have rarely seen a good cup run being negative to a good league dito!
Most of the time,a good cup run AND a good league "run"..seems to go hand in hand.
That said,no need for us to get foolish with the team selection against eagles at home.Letīs look at the situation 20 January and progress with some brains.
We wonīt necessarily need the all the first eleven to survive this round..but..we should field a team more than capable enough to beat them!
Iīd like a good run in the FA Cup..last time we had one of those we beat Newcastle in one of the most memorable matches there were in the 00`s for a Wolves fan..so letīs give it a good go hey?
Millwall in 03..dirty Millwall!
Cardiff at Wemberley?..surely,if they could..thereīs always a chance isnīt it?
