By Thomas White April 8 2009 The Welsh Cup final which was believed to originally take place at Cardiff City's Ninian Park will now take place at Parc y Scarlet's, Llanelli
The Football Association of Wales is delighted to announce that the 2008/09 Welsh Cup Final will be played at Llanelli'ss new £23m Parc Y Scarlets Stadium on Bank Holiday Monday 4th May 2009.
This is a high quality venue, which recently staged the UEFA Under 21 Championship qualifying match between Wales and Luxembourg, when the organisation on the night was of the highest standards and won plaudits from all those attending, including the almost 3,000 spectators.
It was decided to fix the final venue, prior to the Semi-Finals being played on the forthcoming weekend, to enable clubs to make immediate arrangements, should they be successful and progress to the Final.
FAW Head of Competitions John Deakin said, "Following incidents at last Season's Final at Newtown, the Football Association of Wales in conscious of the necessity to play this match at a venue, which is conducive with the safety and security of Players, Match Officials and Spectators and Parc Y Scarlets is an ideal venue to comply with these requirements."
The last time that the Final was played in the Town was as recent as May 2007, when Carmarthen Town defeated Afan Lido 3-2 at Llanelli AFC's Stebonheath Park.
Ridiculous, are the FAW going to sheel out for the extra policing and stewarding costs they'll need? Because the ground won't make any difference without that.
I see Bangor City have complained to John Deakin regarding both the venue and date, and there is talk from some fans on Citizens Choice of boycotting the match.
We're interested in hearing the opinions of Bangor/Aber and neutral fans on this matter for an article we're compiling.

If its been stated that its going to be played at Parc Y Scarlets, Llanelli, then thats end of. This could possibly be the new home of the Welsh Cup Final, as Wembley is for the FA Cup Final. Teams like Newcastle, Sunderland etc., realise this and so do their fans if/when they reach the final.
Anyway, after Bangor fans spoiled the day for llanelli fans last year, what the hell have they got to complain about.....?????
For football fans Parc y Scarlets doesn't have the same aura as a wembley or even a Mill Stad or a Racecourse. It will be a disaster. "Boycott" would probably tho be a euphemism for disappointing level of interest.
The atmosphere at the U21 game at the scarlets ground was quite good for a 15,000 capacity stadium with only 3,500 there. I assume the FAW are trying the ground out again for a full international there. They were very pleased with the U21 outcome and intend having a first team game there. So this would be a chance to iron out any problems they had at the U21 game. There were a few but not many. Compared to the liberty this was very well organised although one or two stewards were over zealous. Plenty of parking unlike the liberty and no problems with ticketing either.
With regards to the Cup Final is it a 3pm KO? If it's an evening or sunday ko can't get back home using public transport!! Only in this country. Would have liked to got to the semi final last sunday but the first train available would have got me there just as the second half would have started!!! And the return journey would have meant arriving back home about 11pm!!!
If Parc Y Scarlets is to be the venue for all future finals then so be it. It seems to be a great stadium and must have a good playing surface for the game on seeing what took place for the U21 but as ioio says is not quite the same comparison with Wembley in England - not that that really matters much to me.
The distance is also something that I cannot complain too much about although would have preferred Latham Park for this particular game given the sides involved.
I do however object to it being on the Bank Holiday Monday rather than the usual Sunday fixture that has always been the case as our wondeful A470 and holiday traffic-filled roads will be a real pain.
Add to this the late kick-off then it does seem to take on a an absurd element which will rule out most of those who are worried about work the next day but more importantly that kids will not be able to make it, returning to the north in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
My kids have not missed a Welsh Cup game for some years but unfortunately are unlikely to make the final and that does p!ss me off.
Agree, date is very wrong! However, for the final to be staged there every year... I would of course love it to be the automatic choice for the Welsh Cup Final... Swansea/ Cardiff have squandered/ turned their heads up at it over the years - however, the people of Llanelli welcome it with open arms.
We're very much a sporting town (ok rugby initially) and as BBJ highlighted (to which I also noticed) that the 3k that were situated in the 14k+ stadium it felt as though there was 6k... I know the town are looking forward to hosting a full soccer international game!!!
The WFA seem to think that a 'big' stadium makes the game 'bigger'. The decision to play the final at Parc y Scarlets' is almost beyond belief. Let's be honest LLanelli isn't a football town, and at Welsh Prem level the attendances at South Wales Clubs is low. The final should be played at a venue suitable to both finalists, and one which has a chance of attracting neutal supporters.
I think you should reconsider that statement to read Llanelli is a ruby town, however, truth be told it is a sporting town because a lot of people love football here too, however, the footballing element of the town support Swansea!!! FACT!!! However, the minority of who also support the Reds... So I think it your statement is wrong if it's your opinion then fair enought. Either way, which ever way you look at it Llanelli IS a sporting town and if we're the Wembley of Wales - I'm happpy. AND in fairness, if somewhere up North had the same going on (lets say Bangor), I too would be happy with that - we need a perminent fixture for the competition and one that is in a new stadium that can accommodate hooliganism which the Turks (Reds) witnessed last season!
Let the FA use just a small part of the large rental they would pay for Parc y Scarlets to employ a proper security firm and hire temporary barriers and pay police costs to ensure proper segregation at the Traeth and give the rental to Porthmadog FC. This would probably ensure an excellent crowd of about 1000 from Bangor, 500 from Aber and 100 frightened neutrals as well as 50 self-importants starved of some of the facilities to which they are accustomed (which can only be a good thing).
So is it to be 1650 attendance and a great and (due to the specific expenditure) safer atmosphere at Port or 600 at a hollow 14000-seater stadium at the hard-up Scarlets at a higher overall cost.
Give me a day and fifty quid in expenses, and I'll organise it.

I wouldn't mind being penned in at one end by an exheuberant and overzelous amount of police officers at Latham Park like the league cup final. Even though I'm based in Cardiff these days, I don't mind travelling to wherever this is played, but I just really don't want it to be played in a souless rugby stadium. How does this promote, and encourage clubs in the Welsh Premier?
I e-mailed a 1,500 letter to Mr Deakin on Tuesday. Have I had a reply? Go figure...
Red Turk I think you should reconsider that statement to read Llanelli is a ruby town, however, truth be told it is a sporting town because a lot of people love football here too, however, the footballing element of the town support Swansea!!! Replied Rant Over!
Yes I agree when players are spat upon by llanelli supporters whilst making their way to the dressing room the "Dai's" have to be contained
Odd how Llanelli people will watch the 'Swans' in football but moan and slag off the provincial rugby team at the Liberty Stadium. "Llanelli, truly schizophernic".
It would have to be a taxi from the railway station.Depending on traffic, around 7 mins, 10 mins max. The taxi would have to drop you off at the entrance road to the ground, just off the roundabout where all the shops end. This was the case for the U21 game anyway, where we were thinking we could just drive into the stadium grounds and be dropped off outside, as it wasn't exactly busy - say no more !!
All the best
A total over reaction from the FAW, its in South Wales to stop as many Bangor fans from attending as possible, its truely spiteful by the FAW.
Making out Latham Park isnt up to the job is pathetic, they have held many finals there and only recently had Bangor at the League cup final with no problem.
The problems at last years final were partly caused by the FAWs late kick off so quite a number of fans were really drunk and the lack of investment in proper security knowing how excited the Bangor fans can get. Everybody could see the problems had to be resolved except the FAW.
If Latham Park is up to being granted a European License then whats good enough for UEFA should be fine for the FAW to play the welsh cup final there. To say we're not holding a final there because of the fans is wrong, when UEFA are happy for European games to be played there. Security must be up to scratch to get the license.
Maybe the FAW dont want to pay out for extra security, they dont want to pay out for much in this league except for refreshments.
To create the best atmospheres the finals need to be played at smaller capacity grounds, just look at what the national team have been saying about a near empty Millenium stadium.
